| any one out there had any experience with DPMS and special order barrels. I ordered mini sass barrel 8/18/2008 through a DPMS dealer I was told at time order was placed three to six months. I paid for it up front and I check on it every month and still no release date I see new rifles every day with the barrel I ordered. I'm patient person but with a lower built and a upper sitting waiting on a barrel my patience is getting thin. any you guys had this problem with DPMS. |
|
Cancel your order. MidwayUSA shows Mini Sass barrels in stock.

Russ4777...Thats a good looking build !. What handguard is that?, & the comp ?. Your config is what I am looking to build next. I have an all DPMS M4 16", assembled the lower, but purchased the upper. Am getting the urge to go to "work"......."G" Thanks. The DPMS Mini-SASS barrel has a midlength gas system, but I installed a rifle-length Hogue knurled handguard to cover the gas block. The muzzle brake is made by a guy named Ross Schuler in Idaho. It's stainless steel material coated with flat black Norrell's Moly Resin. It really reduces the muzzle climb and is priced right at $40.00 shipped. A really good value. |

What kind of accuracy are you guys getting out of your DPMS Barrels?
I'm putting together a 24" varminter and thinking of trying the DPMS 24" SS 1:9 twist due to the price (under $300). But wonder if I'd be wiser to spend another C-note and get a match grade. I really would like to know how much accuracy difference between a >223 Rem match grade barrel or any RRA, Bushmaster, Olympic or any other SS bull barrel. |
| Russ4777...Thanks for the reply & info. Did you use a DPMS low profile gas block or some other ?. I understand that the Mini SASS barrel has dimples to set the gas block too. Still a good looking rifle !!. I want to pick a final build & start the process of accumulating parts......."G" |
| found out today that I will have my barrel next week as for accuracy we'll see but I had 16 inch bull barrel DPMS that shot great and I've got one I built with 16 inch heavy barrel that shoots real good. from what I have been told Dpms use's Montana blanks and builds there own barrels . the mini sass is 18 inch stainless fluted 1:8 twist button rifled air gaged teflon coated and from every thing I've read they bust eggs |

It fits nicely under the Hogue tube. It has 3 setscrews of which 2 of them line up perfectly with the DPMS "dimples". I just marked and redrilled a new third dimple to capture all three. |

Russ4777.....Thanks for the reply. I don't mean to be a persistent PITA, just keep finding things to ask.
1. Did you have a problem with the Hogue tube.... some say it is difficult to line up the gas tube & Hogue nut.?. (Edit); 2. Did you have to order an oversize barrel nut, ref. a comment on the Midway barrel page ?. Went on to Brownells site & viewed the installation of a Hogue tube, saw that the Hogue Nut holds the barrel.....!!! All looks simple enough. You have a "clean look" rifle.....how does it shoot ?. I do not want to load a build down with "quad-rails", etc, as I mainly punch holes in paper so far.......Thanks again from Cajun Land..SW Louisiana..........."G" |
| Tuesday morning started out pretty rough had car accident and spent the day at the ER. Left ER around 3 pm went to get some BBQ and as I pulled into parking lot gunstore called my barrel is in. may not get to pick up till next week with all I've got going on but now I can start picking out four rail and optics |
|
WINTERDOG; Glad you are ok, keep the thread posted how u r doing. Let us know how the build is going...
I received my roll pin punches & starters from Brownells, got a barrel block from Model 1 sales Next month, will order my stripped upper & get going....us retired folks have to limit the $$$ going out......"G" |

back half of mine look familiar http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/yy280/winterdog_2010/ar15pics/IMG_7248.jpg Mine looks a bit different from the right side. I don't like or need forward assist or the case deflector, so I started with a slick-sided 9 mm upper. I drilled the gas tube hole and installed a full length dust cover. Makes for a cleaner look, IMHO, without all that unnecessary crap protruding from the rifle.

Ordered mine from Midway for 189, got it 2 days later (yesterday.) No gas block with it BTW, one or two of the reviews on Midway stated it came with one, I used the MI low profile block, still waiting on a levang brake:

What optic were you using? Thanks! I typically don't go heavier than 69 gr. Otherwise the bullets have to be seated so deeply in the case to fit into an AR mag. This moves the bullet too far off the rifling. I prefer to seat within 0.010" of the rifling. I have not shot the 69's in this barrel yet. I need to work up some more loads with the Sierra MK. My scope is a Nikon 4.5-14 x 40. |

Russ; thanks for the reply & the pics. Looks like I will do a similar build. I like the clean look, am undecided to use the clean gas block or a railed version with a shorter tube in case I ever want to use iron sights on it......
...this is a great post.....keep it going...y'all ..."G" |

Russ here it is so far. you said in earlier post that the gas manifold you used had 3 set screws that lined up with two dimples in your barrel and you drilled a third. my barrel has three dimples did yours. also did your gas manifold look just like the photo in link. my plans at this point is to use 10 inch daniel defense lite rail if I can get gas block or manifold under it. small part of it will stick out the one in your link is pretty sharp and should look good. any pics or measurements you have would be helpful thanks |

thanks for the reply and pics Russ my question on dimples was did your barrel have three and only two line up or did it just have 2 |
|
My barrel has 3 predrilled dimples like yours.
The setscrew holes of the G.B. Systems gas block I got from Brownell's are approximately .660" apart on centers. The first setscrew hole in my gas block is about .312" forward of the rear edge of the GB. The next hole is about .966" from the rear edge and the most forward hole is about 1.612" from the rear edge. This GB actually overhangs the forward edge of the barrel OD for the GB slightly. Again, 2 of the 3 GB holes matched 2 of the the DPMS dimples, one did not. Can't remember which one. DPMS positioned the dimples to match their own gas block. All manufacturers use different lengths, setscrew count and spacing. The only way you will get a perfect match is to buy the DPMS GB. |
| thanks for that info it helps alot. looks like your gun shoots as good as it looks hope mine shoots like that. just curious what kind of trigger is in yours. right now mine has RR two stage not sure if I'm going to like it. I have bushmaster varmit gun with factory two stage but I have two pound jared triggers in three other guns I've built and I may put one in this gun also. |

I had to join to add my AR build to this thread.
http://inlinethumb40.webshots.com/47143/2392988780058159120S600x600Q85.jpg I wanted a stainless barrel so I chucked it up in a lathe and polished off the black everywhere but inside the flutes. I then made my own Fake Mickulek comp that comes back over the barrel and has an 11 deg target crown. I didn't like the idea of the extra noise but I liked the look. I still need to buy a tap for to thread the fake comp before i can put it on. I'm still waiting on funds to be reimbursed from work for a trip I took so I can buy my free float forearm, then I'll assemble. |

what kind of fore arm are you going to use I'm going to get the MI SS-series 12" tube. I don't like rails all over everything but I think I can live with the full length top rail because I like the look of the multiple round vents and its cheaper than the troy unit with the same look. |

what kind of scope is that looks like a konus? Yep, m30 4.5-16 Quoted:

The GB from Brownell's is pretty low and will most likely fit under a DD tube. Again. 2 of the 3 setscrews of this block aligned with the dimples in the DPMS barrel. You would not really need to drill a third, but I did. Same with the MI lp block, but only the rear hole lines up, so the brownells block is probably the better option for this barrel. Quoted:

You might also consider the YHM smooth model. I was planning on the MI SS too, but midway has the YHM's on sale right now, $25 less for the rifle-length tube. Just got back from the first range session with mine. Weather was nasty (cold, misty, rainy, windy) so I only put 100 rounds of Walmart Remington bulk 55 grn through it. 5 shot groups were averaging about 1.25 @ 100 yds, no target pics though, they were turning to mush in the rain. I'm hopeful that barrel/trigger break-in, handloads, remembering-to-bring-sandbags and nicer weather should help those groups quite a bit. I like this barrel :) No malfunctions btw. |

Don't forget your Bullet Button or Radlock magazine release and a 10-round mag for your build. Keep it legal and protect your ass. |
|
I actually bought the radlock first after getting the stripped lower and have a 10/20 mag as well. I am only missing the barrel nut/free float handguard and the build will be complete minus the optics which I may have to borrow off my 30-06 temporarily until I can get a good scope for the AR. My family is in NV and UT so we have annual gun shoots each summer when I come up to visit which is why I opted for the Radlock so I can be free when back home. |

Winterdog...thanks for the reply....have not purchased stock.. just finished the stripped upper this afternoon...
(from Bravo Co.) took me longer to set up my portable work bench & lights, get tools out then install the ejection port cover & the forward assist assembly. I am thinking of ordering the barrel before Midway is out....but read a post about the barrel end NOT being 1/2 x28, did an e-mail to Midway to find out whats- what...."G" ( should have bought other parts to keep me busy.....however;...I am retired & on somewhat a budget these days ). |
