[ARCHIVED THREAD] - DPMS midlength .308?

i just read an article about the dpms sass rifle and it looks like a midlength gas system. is that just my hopeful imagination? i would love to have a dpms .308 middy. it just looks right and i have read that is a smoother operating gas system. i like the ap4 that is available, just want something different. anybody know?

yeah, i didn't think i was seeing things. i would love to have a nice little carbine like the ap4, but with the midlength gas setup. that is why i haven't jumped in and bought the ap4 already.

Please tell me what the excitement is about a "mid length" gas system is. Is this just another way of saying you'd prefer a 20" barreled shorty over the 16" AP4?

Silly me....I'd go in a gun shop asking the guy for a mid length barreled rifle.... not a mid length gas system rifle.

well, i don't want a midlength barrel, i want a midlength gas system. just like my armalite ar-10, it has a 16" barrel and a midlength gas system. i never said i wanted a 20" barrel. hope that clears things up for ya.

Ok....no wisecracks from me this time, as there evidently must be differtences I'm not familiar with.
All I know is how to scope and shoot my AR's and take em down to clean them.

Could you briefly explain to me what you mean by a "mid length gas system". And, if it wasn't mid-length, then would it be "full-length"? -and how would it operate differently?

"mid-length" puts the gas port about two inches closer to the muzzle than the carbine-length gas system (like on the AP4). This should cut down on gas port erosion (at least it does in 5.56 ARs), and lead to smoother functioning.

well, it looks very cool however it is configured. i suppose i could live with that. i hear nothing but good things about these rifles. my armalite is great but you can never have too many.

You can have a mid-length AP4, but it's a DIY project.

A DPMS AP4 carbine in .308 was the host gun.
Armalite AR-10A4 Carbine barrel
Daniel Defense 9.0 AR-10 Rail, with DPMS barrel nut
Magpul M-93B stock W/buffer by slash. AR-10 recoil spring
Chip McCormick two stage trigger

The Armalite barrel installed and headspaced fine. The bolt spins on a go, but not on no-go, so it might be a litle tight for 7.62. But the DPMS barrel did the same.

I'm just waiting for the gas tube from Armalite. I'll post a range report when I get to shoot it.

I had an AR-10 carbine that worked really well, but I switched to the DPMS so the magazines would be common with my SR-25. I really like how this looks and feels. Hope it shoots as well!
