I am planning on building a Mk12 Mod H "Heavy", and I can't decide on which pattern to go with - the DPMS or the Armalite. I love the DPMS GII and the Armalite DEF-10, but I am not too crazy about the regular DPMS LR-308. If I can't figure out the barrel nut issue to make my handguards of choice work on the DPMS GII, then I'd go with the Armalite. However, it seems to me parts are more available for the DPMS/SR25 pattern rifles.
Like I said, I'd love to use a DPMS GII, but I am thinking it fit my needs because I am not sure if the barrel nut would work with the handguards I want. In order to get the "Holland" look and feel, I need to put an old school PRI round hand guard on it. I know I can use the regular DPMS LR-308 and make it work, but the GII just feels awesome - at least the one I held the other day did! Next up is the DEF-10. Other than the DPMS GII, it is my #1 choice so far because of the price and my experience with Armalites has led me to believe their barrels are very accurate for their price point - which means I can use the stock barrel for a good while before needing to upgrade barrels. Can anybody visualize what I am trying to do and give me some pointers on which one to go with? |

The G2 is new and does not have the aftermarket support that the LR308 or Armalite both do.
If you like the Armalite then go with that...be aware of A and B models....A models take dpms pattern mags (pmags)... Personally I would go with a LR308 pattern gun due to overall parts availability. |

Armalite.
You're limited with aftermarket stuff. Limited to ONLY good stuff. Not a problem at all. If you want s rifle that works, and works well, go armalite. I If you care more about boutique looks, fancy coatings, and BS like that, more options in the LR308 pattern. |

I'll say Armalite but with a variation. It depends on whether or not you want plastic mags or metal. If you want plastic and they'll work for your requirements, buy an A model. If you want the best .308 AR metal mag made, buy a B model.
There is another advantage that nobody has a clue about when it comes to Armalite. They use a smaller diameter firing pin. That's not a big deal until you decide you want to rebarrel to some flavor of 6.5. Then everybody starts clucking about buying a JP high pressure bolt or complete BCG for a lot more than $257 that you can get an Armalite for every day of the week. This naturally leads to the discussion of can I put an Armalite (DPMS) barrel on a DPMS (Armalite) upper because of the barrel extension? Because as we all know there's 3,000 barrel extension makers for .308 ARs and what's headspace? |

The lower, A model takes original AR-10 mags (KAC/Magpul etc). The B model takes a proprietary mag from Armalite. They had a gen 1 version which was a modified M14 mag but they have since had gen 2 that looks like a 20 round AR-15 mag and a M14 mag mated. Many (including me) consider the B Gen 2 mags to be the finest .308 AR mag that you can get. |

Another advantage to the B model is when Hitlery is president and all hicap mags are banned and your pmag lips have eroded or the body has cracked you are done. WE can take a M14 mag and punch a hole in the side and have a new mag. Im not a hater of either model but I have seen enough Pmags crack from the wrapper with very little use that I stay away from them. If I had a A model I'd go with LaRue or KAC mags.... |
