I just picked up a DPMS "shorty" with the 4 position collapsible stock.  Please forgive my ignorance and I should have researched it further, but is it possible to change the stock to a 6 position collapsible in this type of configuration?  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  Lesson learned––consult this board before making decisions!

Yes, I changed my XM177 4 position aluminum stock for a M4 stock.
If you wanted to just change the stock, just make sure which version of the buffer tube you have. Their is a mil spec stock, which is strait even at the back of the buffer tube and a commercial stock that is uneven towards the top of the buffer tube end.
You could also just replace the whole assembly witha a mil spec stock assembly. Pretty easy to do, but you may need the castle nut wrench to remove and install new stock assembly. Come to think of it, I believe that both require different castle nut wrenches. But someone will come by and clarify that.
