I am kind of embarassed that I have close to 1k posts on this site and still don't own an AR. I mostly hang out in the armory talking shotguns and precision rifles.
I just reprioritized my wants and an AR is high on my list. I was looking at Bravo company blem lower and I needed help finding a BASIC upper. I want a 16", flattop upper, basic handguards are fine for now, front sight post or gas block is ok, i'm not opposed to buying the upper and BCG seperately,1:9 or 1:7 is fine, I dont have a burning desire to sling 75g pills, 55g or 62g is fine for me. As a college kid, money is tight but if i have to save a little longer than so be it. How are these? Dynamic Armament Flattop Is it realistic to expect my criteia for under $450 from a respectable compnay? |

Why don't you get a BCM upper to go on your BCM lower?
If you forgo the rails, something <$600 with a bolt and charging handle. Hard to go wrong there. If you're wondering about BCM read THIS |

If you're wondering about BCM read THIS +1 BCM is hard to beat. With thay said OP, there still deals to be found on the EE. I recently bought my uncle a Daniel Defense barreled complete upper (w/ BCG and CH) with a cheap railed foreend for $500 shipped off the EE. Spend your money on a good barrel and BCG. Add the rest later as you see fit. |

what about a stag upper and lower?
Stag 16" Upper $465 and Stag lower $290 $755 total Would I need anything else to be up and running from a mechanical standpoint? sights are the only obvious shortfall that I can see. |

Here's a complete lower from Surplus Arms at $169 and change:http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=158&t=783211 Now I've saved you about $80+ on the lower that can be better spent on the upper (where it counts). I'd take a hard look at BCM or perhaps a higher end used complete upper on the EE. To get up and running with the BCM linked several posts above, you can find a cheap detachable carry handle ($20-$40) until you save enough money to get a decent BUIS. It's preferable to spend your money in the upper, in particular the barrel and BCG. |

This would seem to fit your criteria quite nicely. I am admitedly partial to Spikes, however this upper seems to have virtually all of the desireable "mil-spec" features of the top-tier rifles, with the exception of commercial quality barrel steel (4140), but then, I've never heard of a 4140 barrel exploding before so you should be safe Granted, this is a VERY new upper and there's not a whole lot of info on it right now (87GN, care to do a review?), but specs-wise it seems to be legit. If you don't want that upper, then definitely go with a Spikes/BCM middy. You'll be very happy with either one. Pick your poison

wold it just be worth it to shell out $800 for a Spikes complete gun? Absofrigginlutely. If I were you though, I would get the middy upper instead of the standard (carbine) upper that comes on the M4 LE. Then just get the Spikes lower and you're set. right on. so a spikes complete middy is $809.99. excuse my ignorance but middy means 9" handguards? |

Typically they start out with 9 " hand guards but when you hear the term middy they aren't referring to the length of the handguards... just the type of gas system. you could put longer... or shorter handguards on a mid length. assuming a low profile gas block was used and its a free float system. |
