So I have a good bit on my plate as is with my 3 yo son and my daughter due coming up in dec.
I've got our day to day bills handled with a new house and brand new car for the wife. My newest hobby (building my ar) has me second guessing my choices. I've got a stag lower with lpk and it went together perfect, unlike my buddy's noveske lower where he had some issues with roll pins. Anyhow, I'm wanting to build a recce style rifle minus bipod, cause we have nowhere to shoot really that far. Here's where the second guessing starts. Obviously can't spend big dog coin, but don't want the cheapest parts I can find either. I'm working on a complete colt upper that was taken off to upgrade to the .300 blackout. I'm hoping to get some rounds down range to quell the urges to hurry up and buy the upper I want to build. I'm sure y'all can see I'm new to the platform. But from reading on here almost non stop I can see there is high regard for colt and they deserve it. The thing is is it has the fixed front sight and carry handle. Nothing wrong with it, just want the flat top so I can add optics later on. Going with the colt upper, I'll have a dedicated truck gun. Should I just wait it out and build MY rifle, one that will be respectable, but not best of the best or just be happy with what I have available? |
| buy once cry once. It took me 2 rifles before i got what I wanted. IMO put the upper you have for sale on the Equipment Exchange here and use that money to buy the upper you want. I have a daughter due in January so I feel your pain. but I just bought and sold a bunch of stuff on the EE and it saved me a BUTT LOAD of money so the wife didnt get mad |

I hope that I understood what you are asking.
I think that you are considering taking your Colt upper with the fixed front sight and carry handle and converting it to a .300 blackout and/or buying a flat top upper and building the .300 blackout instead of using the Colt upper you already have...did I get that right? Going on the above assumption, since you are new to the AR platform, why the .300 blackout? Unless you have a supressor for the .300 blackout. If you don't have a suppressor, there are better choices, either the 5.56 if you just want an AR to shoot and develop your skills or a 6.8 of you want a bit more powerful round, but the downside to the 6.8 is it will cost you just shy of a buck a round for ammunition. For a truck gun, the 5.56 is a great rifle. Cost of ammunition isn't too high and you can buy a .22 upper for even less costly ammunition to practice with. With all that said, and if I understand what you are asking, take your Colt and put a 5.56 barrel and use it for a truck gun. Set aside some additional funds and build YOUR rifle with the flat top upper and the .300 blackout, another 5.56, 6.8 SPC or whatever barrel you decide to use. 2 is 1 and 1 is none and 3 is even better |

I'm on my phone so I'm probably not presenting my question properly.
I bought a stag lower to build my ar. My neighbor has the colt upper in .556 that he took off and upgraded to the .300 All I want for the foresable future is a .556 for my purposes. Which are the general- defense, hunting, shooting shit up, always easily accesable. I'm working on acquiring his .556 colt upper so that I can ease the urges to spend money better suited at this time to do for the new addition and then I can slowly work on building the upper I truly would like. I hope I've cleared my question up. I have additional questions which involve more seasoned opinions and observations so that I can save myself from the trial and error process at this time. |
| I'd do it...hell I have done something similar. Get the functional and working upper and use it. In the mean time keep an eye out for sale or Blemish uppers from Bravo, PSA, Spike;s, ect.. Buy a sale barrel that you want for the purpose you intend to use it for.. you mentioned a RECCE build, so find a nice stainless 16" that will give you solid accuracy, buy a nice scope mount and some decent glass on sale. Just work from there. |

Roger that. What started my thought process today was wondering if I should pick up something like a psa deal on a magpul stock kit or would I be better off getting like a spikes or bcm buffer tube and piecing the stock I want together? If you know what stock you want then go for it, but if you are unsure then get the kit without the stock (ie buffer tube, castle nut, backing plate, spring, and buffer). You can always pick up a cheap mil spec M4 stock for around $20 shipped give or take $5 and use that till you are sure what flavor stock you want. |
