I’m running an 18" Browning dehumidifier in my large safe. It’s at 71% after running for 20 days.
What humidly level should it be at? What is best for the guns? |

I try to keep my safe between 40%-50% year round. You don't really want humidity over 50%, but it can in fact be too low. Very low humidity can cause problems for wood stocks, paper, etc. I use a combination of silica desiccant and a heating rod. One common mistake people make about the "golden rod" type heating elements is that they are led to believe they are dehumidifiers. This is simply not true. What a heating rod does, is to raise the temperature in the safe just slightly above the ambient temperature outside the safe. This keeps moisture in the air from condensing on the things in the safe. It DOES NOT lower the actual humidity in the air in any significant way. If your humidity is that high, I'm going to guess you've got the safe in the garage or basement. I would pick up a couple of rechargeable desiccant packs (EvaDry, Safe Dri, etc) and give them a try. You'll have to "recharge" them in the oven pretty frequently, but it should help get the moisture down. Secondly, remember that moisture condenses on things that move from warm to cold, or cold to warm too fast (think cold drink on a warm day). If the safe is not in a climate controlled environment, always try to avoid sudden changes of temperature or at least wipe the gun down before putting it back. |
