Details.. 17th Bday coming up thinking about getting an AR kit for it.
I chose Del-Ton because they get good reviews and seem to have a great price. I do not know what the difference between some of their kits are though.. I like the flat top design so I can add optics in the future so that narrows the kits down to these two.. 16" Mid-Length Rifle Kit 16" M4 Rifle Kit What are the differences between those two kits? Also what lower would be a good inexpensive yet. I read the recent thread suggesting these..? Stripped Lowers Thanks |
|
The difference between the M4 and the mid-length is the length of their gas systems.
The M4 is a carbine gas system; the shortest of the three gas systems. The mid-length, is just that, midway between the carbine system and shorter than the rifle system. Now I will point out that you will have some problems purchasing the stripped lower receiver yourself. As the stripped receiver is listed as "other" rather than rifle on Fed forms you wiull have to be 21 to purchase one yourself. Though there be other options |

Would you go with the M4 over the mid-length? Is it a person preference or what are the pros/cons? Officially (and honestly) its my parents gun and Im just going to be putting it together and shooting it with them when we go to the range. Until Im 18 of course. |

Well personally, my first AR was infact a Del-ton mid-length rifle kit on a Rock River lower. But it all comes down to what you want personally (and there is the ARFcom motto –– get both). lol if I could afford it, I would. I've spent my money on other guns too.. Lancaster AK-47 Mossberg 500 Springfield Armory 1911 GI S&W 643 .38 snub GSG-5 now I need an AR. Alright I figured out what to search on Google to find the differences and I think I'll go with the med-length. Now to choose a lower... |

i prefer the mid-length rifles personally, the kit is priced right and just find a lower from a reptuable company thats the plan! Hopefully I'll get a Spikes lower Think I should pay the $75 and go for the free float? buddy it's your money, i personally would keep my first rifle a KISS carbine, but that's just me. the next rifle you build(and yes, you will), i would add rails, folding sights, etc....! what i have found is that it's really cool to have the "Tacticool" options all over the gun, but sometimes i just enjoy shooting a plain jane KISS rifle with good ol' iron sights. what i have done is built a KISS M4gery, mid-length carbine, and 20" rifle. everything else has rails, optics, aimpoints, and other tactical wiz bang parts . that's just me and the way i roll |

keep it simple stupid, just a reminder that sometimes the base or simple things get overlooked I love the stock simple look/performance. The only gun that I have modified in any way is my GSG-5. All I did was throw a weaver mount and a holographic and replaced all the screws in it (big problem with the gsg). My AK, 1911, .38, mossberg, other rifles, all are stock and wonderful |

i narrowed it down to this..
16" Mid-Length Rifle kit http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii173/andyffer/Screenshot2010-02-08at104229PM.png and then the receiver: http://coldhandarms.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=4 |

I picked up one of these for a new build and the machining and finish is super nice......very deep flat black. You can get the built lower with LPK plus RRA stock & stage 1 trigger job for $239 plus tax. Stripped lowers are $99. |

I would spend the extra $25 on the Flat top upper with M4 feed ramps. The option is under the "Uppers" pull down menu. M4 feed ramps are a nice feature that all of use paper target battling operators need , he made good choices and only need a BUIS and possibly a quality range red dot like a SPOT. he's not build a full auto M4 and using worn USGI mags |

I would order my Spikes lower directly from Spikes, rather than a 3rd party, just to be safe. They have KISS lowers with no logo or color fill going for 84.95 currently. Yes but $90 is quite a significant difference *sigh* http://www.spikestactical.com/z/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=104_65&products_id=309 |

Why would I want the lower quality one when I could get the better one for the same price |
| good luck 2-4 week delay on any upper or rifle kit you order, called today as they said they had uppers in stock,so i ordered one, well guess what they say the gotta build it as orders have boomed and it will take 2-4 weeks to just get a upper, sure wish they would say that 1st as i could have spent $100 more and just got a DPMS,STAG or RRA,Kinda pisses me off that dont state this, but i do know i will never order again from DEL-TON |

I dont think that is unreasonable at all. You do know that they build each order after its placed and in the order that its received? |
| Monkeymaker, no need to trash on Del-Ton because they are currently busy. I placed an order 2 weeks ago and more than one of my parts were out of stock and they called me yesterday to let me know all my parts were in and my build was being started as we speak. They have the greatest customer service of a company I have ever dealt with. Del-ton is good to go. Just don't order until I get my kit haha. |

Others who ordered after me have received their 20" kits. So they do not process orders in the order that they are received. On top of that they charged my CC the end of Jan. and still no upper. I sent a email yesterday and no response. I sent another one today and still waiting. |

A quick look at Del-ton's industry forum will make it clear that at times they run out of parts and some orders have to be back ordered. So, yes, they most certainly assemble and fill orders in the order that they are received. If they are out of chromed 20 inch barrels, then those orders will not be completed and back ordered. All the while unlined barrels are in stock and shipping, etc. So yes there probably will be order placed after yours that are getting shipped because all the parts are available while parts needed to complete your order are not available. If we want to continue this discussion, we should take it elsewhere and not crap on this kids thread. |

I ordered a kit on 2/1, it arrived and I assembled it last night, 9 days later. It was a odd combination of parts so it was not ready made and had to be built to order.
When I called at the first of the week to get my tracking number Jason said there were suddenly and absolutely slammed with folks spending their tax refunds, it appears my order was placed just in time. I also called and checked parts availability prior to ordering and modified the hand guard I was getting to avoid a delay of 2-3 weeks. I think a lot depends on what you order. |
