I see that a lot of members use surefire.  However, the brightest flashlights they offer cost as much as a gun.  I purchased an E2D and I was not as impressed as I thought I would be.  Acually, other than the spiked bezel, I could have done about as well with a Maglite for $7.  So, I am looking to mount something and I am having a hard time beliving I should spend my money on a surefire or any other high dollar accessory.  After all, I would rather have 2 ARs than one with a light.

I would like to have a light that would blind someone for a couple of seconds to that it is more likely that I will not have to shoot the intruder....without selling a gun to pay for it.

What do you recommend?

If you want to go brighter than a 6V, go to a 9V Millenium Series Surefire, like the M96X series. These are more than bright enough for all applications indoors, and they do a pretty good job outdoors out to 50 meters as well. If you want the best, it will cost you. The millenium series depending on options, will run you in the area of $400.00.

I don't believe there are Maglites that are as bright as a Surefire. At leat not from the specs.

Regarding having 2 AR's versus one with a light.....

You can only shoot one at a time, and if you need a mounted light, well....you need a mounted light. Kind of a "Quality versus Quantity" thing.

Thanks,

I don't want to spend the money unless I am sure that I am buying more than hype.  I have not heard anything bad about surefires.  But I want to make sure that if I spend that much, that I will get full value.  What do you think about Streamlight or some of their competitors.  Do they offer as good a package for a weapon mount?  I will be mounting it onto an ARMS SIR.

Not to sound like a smart ass, but for a guy who has been on the board since 2001, have you not read at least a thousand threads on low cost weapons lights. Not seen a thousand pics of lights mounted on weapons. not seen one thread on low cost alternatives other then a mag light and a radiator hose clamp????

Have you looked in the light of a Mag light?? not exactly blinding is it.

OK you what an Idea. here ya go,
Surefire G-2 (around $30)
get a shock isolated bezel for it(around $20)
stick with the G-2 Switch or get a Z48/49 Tail switch (around $20)
Brightflashlights can hook ya up with all this.
There are several low cost mounts to interface the flashlight to your SIR, as cheap as a 1" scope ring to some of the fancier throwlever mounts now available. (Again just read some threads and you'll find all you need ) So for under $100bucks you can have a decent weapons grade light that is light years (no Pun) ahead of a mag light as to brightness, durability and reliability.

And if you want serious responses to your post in the future , I would recommend not sharing the Maglight/Weaponlight idea. That might have worked 20 years ago when nothing else was available, but to seriously consider it as a viable alternative in the age of the $30 Surefire  is pretty far out there.

As always..you get exactly what you pay for

That is the info I was looking for.  I have the E2C and the G2Nitrilon (or something).  I think it will use the scope mounts to mount the G2 to the rail for the time being.  I guess I'll save up for the Surefire M972SU07.

I just want to make sure that if I take the plunge, I bought the best for my money.  I still thought they would be brighter.  But I guess they are the best out there.

Josey,

You may want to take a look at these lights:

I'm planning on picking a couple of these up this week if they are available for sale.

They appear to be a satisfactory alternative to Surefire, but it's may be too early to say for sure.

One of the things I like most about Surefire's line of dedicated weaponlights is their versatility. I like the M500 series of dedicated forends for example. With a simple change of the bulb assembly you can go from 125 to 225 lumens. The 12v models can be upgraded from 250 to 500 lumens.

That's enough light for just about anything. I've used the less powerful 125 lumen bulb assembly for a low-light shooting class and it was more than enough to identify and engage targets at CQB distances. I brought a 225 lumen bulb assembly with me just in case, but I never needed it.

Heck, even the ancient 60 lumen Surefire weaponlight mounted on my Benelli shotgun throws plenty of light for most situations.

If you don't want to buy a fancy dedicated Surefire weaponlight you do have scores of other options. There are plenty of people here who get along just fine with a basic 6V Surefire mounted with a basic First Samco rail adapter, like this:

There are many different brands to choose from, but you get the idea. The First Samco mount pictured above costs around $20.00.
