Hey Guys, I am stocking up on some 5.56 Winchester for long term storage (hey...you never know what might happen tomorrow)so here's the question. I'm going to be storing 20, 30 and 40 shot clips loaded on an airtight ammo can. Does anyone know where I can get some little desicator packs to put in the can to keep moisture out? I tried to find some in Wal-Mart and they just laughed. Thanks, Boli |
| If you want to go cheap, use silica gel cat litter. I got a ten pound bag for about $5. Its the same stuff as you buy in the tyvek packets, except its not round, it is random crystals. its even made by the same company, Western Descicant. I like the cat litter better because it won't roll on the floor if you spill it. Just put a hand full in an old sock, tyrap the end and throw it in the ammo can. It works great. When it is time to change it out, just throw it away. |

Here'a a handy $6.99 item from Midway, and it has a humidity indicator built in: www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/799452 |
There is not much air in a properly packed ammo can. 1 or 2 packets is fine. As for changing... never. Cans packed for long term storage should be examined for good seals, closed and never reopened until the ammo is ready for consumption. |
