How do you determine the quality of ar15 part? I have heard so much about buying the best parts for your builds, that it just makes me curious about haw other people make this determination. Is it the reputation of the manufacturer? Personal experience and observation? Advice from folks on the forum? Research on the internet and print material? Rely on the advertising of those who sell the parts? or possibly the recommendation of perceived experts? Maybe all the above? I have a manufacturing/machining background, so a tour of the factories (however impractical) would probably satisfy most of my questions.

Please!! don't call people names and disrespect the posters. This post is NOT meant to start a feud! It is very tempting for some of our more emotional members to take other peoples' opinions as an insult. It can be a natural reaction because of a lack of face to face indicators. Most of use are not writers and our comments in print are not really indicative of our attitudes as we type.

I've been lurking here a pretty long time.  Don't post much.  However, here goes.

Because many of the AR "parts" are actually made by one company and sold by another it is hard to tell just who the manufacturer is.  Forged receivers are made by a hand full of forgers, then finished by a great number of "manufactures".  Heck, I've "manufactured" my own lower from an 80%, that puts three different entities in the process of manufacturing that one lower.  I certainly don't subscribe to the "parts are parts" theory.  Where I can, I buy brand name components, I like YHM and Magpul parts and use them when appropriate.  I like Bravo Company and Palmetto's "quality", service and reputation so use them when I can.  I'm an 03FFL so I try to stick with companies that give discounts, again buying branded parts.  For me it all comes down to picking companies you trust to watch your back and sticking with them.  Sure you can buy parts from several different places to save a few bucks, I would rather order everything I can from one place and have less hastle.  I tend not to "shop around" a lot and stick to my trusted suppliers.  I used to own a computer store and quickly found out the horror of "bottom dollar builds", I think the same applies here, if not more so.

I subscribe and lurk six or so gun forums, I've seen experts come and go (troy, brouhaha, Tatiana (sp?) might be flashes from the past), I take every post with a grain of salt.  Use everyone's comments as a resource and apply my own research/logic.

I think he meant the first post to the response was right on the money and needed no further comment.  I could be wrong though.

I would agree that its important but reputable dealers of the past do not necessarily have the same good reputation today.
