I've been looking at my XM16E1 retro, and i've decided to dimple the safety, mag release, and pins myself.  Has anyone else done this with a drill press?

Nope, it's just to easy to order reproductions from heatnbeat, besides I don't have a drill press. I have heard though that those parts are really hard & will destroy a normal bit.

+1 for above^^^ those parts are very hard.Heatnbeat makes beautiful ones,,I have them and also one of his "transitional" bolt catches on my XM177E2 clone.I love the look, and he does fan-damn-tastic work!!!!!!

Use a HSS, Carbide, or Cobalt bit. Any one of these will do the job. Size wise I plan to use the calibrated eye ball method using pics from the site here. Maybe one of the guys knows the exact size.

Let us know how it turns out. Also,do you have the equipment to repark after the dimples are drilled??
I'll try to measure the original dimpled pins here with my cheapie caliper and let you know what the size is.

I got a set from Heatnbeat for my 607 and they were very nice.

Ok,my parts came off demilled GI rifles:
front pivot pin = 0.090
rear takedown pin = 0.050
2 selectors, smaller one has been attributed to either GM hydramatic or H&R
selector 1 = 0.118
selector 2 = 0.092

It is too easy to order from Heatnbeat.
Even though I've hinted at a drill press for Christmas, I'll still get my reproduction dimpled parts from Heatnbeat.
His look very close to my original parts, except for his having no wear.

+1 for Heatnbeat - plus they don't need to be refinished. Hardly worth doing yourself IMO.

Awesome. Thanks buddy. I'm using DPMS parts so only the divots themselves will need coating. A dab of my trusty Brownells GK will do just fine I think. And I hear you guys as regards Jerrell's stuff but I figure why not make use of the parts that come in the LPK's. I'm really digging doing this stuff myself. Lots of fun this hobby.

Would it be "correct" for a XM16E1 to have dimpled pins. I am working on a XM16E1 myself, and it looks like at Retro Black Rifle that the pins were not dimpled.

Dimpled or Later pins for XM16E1?????

i've seen both versions on the xm16e1.   mines a retro of the early version with the 3 prong.

i might just order them from heatnbeat then since i do not have the ability to repark myself. anyone know how much he charges?

Prices vary according to which pin you're wanting.
I can't say since I usually get a bunch of parts at once from him.
His parts cost more than regular parts, but not as expensive as original retro parts.
Kinda in between but closer to regular parts.
E-mail him and he usually gets back to you pretty quickly.

He has always offered to take back any parts I don't like, but I've never sent any back, and I'm very picky.

Here ya go Tex,,the FH is one I found cheap on EE,but that meant Heatnbeat had the thread the end of the barrel to accept it ,he added flats to the FH,drilled and pinned the FSB I supplied, and what you don't see is that Heatnbeat also PERFECTLY duplicated the barrel extension, and attached an indexing pin.I had told him I planned to just paint the final product,BUT no,,that crazy guy went ahead and parkerized the whole barrel assembly. Then he dry fit it all to his own upper but was not happy,,sooo he went ahead and made up the dummy (solid bar stock ) gas tube..Not only does Heatnbeat do the job to your satisifaction,,he goes to HIS satisfaction which is definately above and beyond the call of duty..Once again I thank you SIR!!!

Oh now, you can't fool me.
That's a real Colt barrel.

Yeah, luckily Heatnbeat is as picky as I am about things looking correct.
I just wish I had his skills!

That carbine looks like in an emergency you could grab it and run.

Attributed by whom?

I have never encountered a dimpled selector on an original GM or H&R rifle. Though original H&R's are commonly found with dimpled pivot pins and occasionally with dimpled take down pins.

Attributed to 3 very well known members of this forum. They have no DEFINATE proof that the smaller size holed selector was made by Colt, and by their handling of many true GI weapons,,they have sumized that the smaller size might well be H&R or GM hyramatic..The parts I have came from a member who strips parts off of demilled GI rifles, and his reputation is impeccable.

Not trying to impugn anyone’s impeccable reputation so please, don’t take offense as none was intended.

However, I have been at this game for a long time and have inspected, gaged and repaired literally thousands (yes, I said thousands) of as manufactured, original M16A1’s from Colt, GM and H&R. Many of those were in Reserve armories and had not undergone later upgrades and were in remarkable as-issued condition. Regrettably, I only started to compile a database of the original rifles a couple of years before we turned them in to  Anniston to be rebuilt into M16A2’s.

Of the several hundred that I collected data on, I only utilized those in original condition as accurate data cannot be collected or educated assumptions made based on modified, rebuilt, demilled or otherwise incomplete examples.

Yes.  I am building a very early XM16E1 with dimpled pins, straight forge upper, MVP barrel, dimpled selector (if I can find one), no hole HG's, and 3 prong FH.  Just waiting on my NDS lower to come in.

when i was looking to make a 90 degree safety for my daewoo, i tried to modify an existing ar15 safety to work.  after buying colbalt drill bits and trying on my friends drill press, i contact jerrell who knocked it out for me fast and cheap.  the heat treating on these parts are tough.  i'd just get them from jerrell.  they man has skills and talent and very reasonable prices.

Hya Bro,,I'm also not disputing your info,,When I received the smaller dimpled selector,I called the seller and asked about it,then followed up with emails to 2 other members and I'm just regurgitating the info they gave me.Again,,their info is based on their observations but no definate facts..I purposely did'nt post their names to keep them out of the limelight for now.If they had said "yes absolutely HR or GM,no doubt about it) I would have posted their names..So Now we,or I should 'research" both your info and theirs and see if we can come up with a definate.. I definatly appreciate your info and will do some diggin.. Thanks Bro... AND PS,,NO offence was taken,,I'm here to learn, not spread the"word according to M1"

I've seen pics of a few XM16E1's with one or two dimpled pins/selectors, etc. I loved the way they look, so decided to buy a dimpled rear takedown pin from Heatnbeat. I'd ruin his business by telling you what he sent me gratis, but damn those extra pins sure look nice on my rifle! No, an XM would not have ALL dimpled pins, but some would be fine AFAIC. Reminds me, I need to dig deeper to find those selectors to send him - they weren't where I put them. Damn tiny AR parts...a detent spring showed up in a crack in the floor the other day...

Hey! Where did you find or how did you make and attach that foregrip! I have been looking for one of these for years! A friend had one like that and I was never able to find one and I think it felt great to handle and hold. Any help?

Cool "dummy" gun as well...

Hya Bro,,I used a pic on page 3(I think it was 3,but maybe 4-5) in the "real deal" pictures above the retro forum. There is a carbine hanging horizontally in  a tent.I then took a cheapie set of no name Hgs,and a mottled PG,held it up to the pic to figure the angle I wanted it to sit at. Drew a temporary line on the PG.Then took a belt sander with 40 grit belt and sanded the top of the PG down till I got a flat surface ( removing the "ears") i,test held it a few times against the pic till I got what I wanted,,then I belt sanded the 2 side edges (tapered) ( untill the grip fit snug and up tight between the 2 ribs on the guard.Once I liked how it fit,I just used the original PG screw with a flat washer and dropped that in thru one of  the HG vent holes, down into the PG and put another washer and a nut (1/4 X 28 IIRC) and tightened it all up..Wasn't hard to do,,but I was surprised how hard the PG material was.Another member used a saw and cut his, then sanded,,that way is probably faster, but I liked my way as I could custom fit it each time I held it up to remove ONLY what I needed to..
