Anyone know why dimpled pins went away? Selecters also. Seems like an easy way to take down a rifle with a bullet. 601,602, early 605 carbines had 'em. Why did they change?
Manufacturing expense?

My guess would be ease of manufacturing vs. actual benefit gained.  Some bean counter in the Pentagon probably figured that it would save the government 20 quadrillion dollars.

A machinist told me that the dimples were for holding the piece in a lathe.  They switched production techniques because the old way took too long.

I've never heard that. I've always heard that it was because of the old "can be taken apart by a single bullet" thing.

Originally, they were made on a lathe 1 at a time which was highly inefficient.  As things progressed and they needed tens of thousands in a hurry they would turn several of them all connected end-to-end then cut them apart afterwords.

'taken apart by a single bullet' would not be affected by the dimples.  The selector dimple is on the side where thr switch has the operating mechanism-cab't push it through the receiver. the push pins also were dimpled on the ''head" side, thus not being able to push through the receiver either.  You can use a cartridge today on a flat, non dimpled pin to seperate the upper and lower.

It was a manufacturing remnant, had nothing to do with takedown. Improvements in manufacturing technology and techniques and the need to produce them faster led to new approaches in production.

What about the selector?
