So after shooting a couple days ago, I came back and noticed that in a couple spots, the barrel had become discolored.

Has anybody ever seen anything like this before?

have you tried to use gun oil to remove the spots? could possibly be surface rust from not maintaining properly....

yeah i tried gunoil. the only chemicals that have ever touched my rifle are hoppes #9 and hoppes lubricating oil.

and it is definitly maintained properly

Were you shooting very quickly at any point? Enough to get your barrel uncomfortably hot?

I've seen stains like that from a hot barrel touching a tarp, plastic buckle, or spraying liquid. Boiled/evaporated spit (as the result of talking excitedly) could also be a culprit.

From the pattern (thin in middle, thick at edges), I'd say something liquid, with a water base. Soda, maybe?

yeah, i did do some bumping (3 mags in a row), but we didnt drink anything until after we'd put the rifles away.
