| Do any of the rifle manufactures make a upper assembly in a dissipator configuration? I like the looks of them, but am not ready to tackle building my own upper assembly yet. |

Del ton makes a dissipator upper with the rifle length gas system. Most others are mock dissipators. this is wrong. Bushmaster coined the term Dissipator and made the carbine length gas system uppers. I beleive cheaper than dirt has some BM Dissy uppers but they are higher than BM sells them on their site???? Maybe left over from when BM was still BM? I went with PSA and am very happy though I wish I never would have sold my original BM Dissy. Especially for the price I sold it for

^^^This is Correct!

Del ton makes a dissipator upper with the rifle length gas system. Most others are mock dissipators.<<<This is Correct! I true dissipator has a 16" barrel with an rifle length gas system...where the FSB is the true gas block. M16 sight radius with minimal felt recoil on a shorter, M4 style rifle. Whereas, the MOCK dissipators have either carbine or mid-length gas systems, with the gas block hidden under a hand guard of some sort and a FSB that is just used for the longer sight radius. |

I'm fine with a mid length gas system, and the extra FSB for the sight radius, as long as can get hte hand garurd I want over the low profile gas block. As for increased recoil, I'd gladly trade a little more (As if 5.56 has any to begin with) to remove the possible short stroking isses of a rifle length system that close to the muzzle. |

Ok, Ok. Bushmaster coined the term "dissipator" but not the concept. The Colt 605 was the first attempt at a "dissipator" type carbine (sort of the pre-carbine carbine), but was unreliable. Bushmaster took the concept, mated it with a carbine gas system and a cut down FSB, and called it a dissipator. I think most people associate "dissipator" with rifle length gas systems, but Bushmaster actually made it work by using a hybrid, or "mock" dissipator setup. I believe the (specific) term has become a general description of full length gas system carbines. |

"Mock" or otherwise, the mid length gas system seems to work best for this configuration. The rifle length gas port is virtually at the muzzle. The dissy is just a 16 inch carbine with the front sight mounted in the rifle or standard location......Ive created many a dissy using m4 type 16 inch barrels and clamp on gas blocks or the Armalite inc clamp on a2 sight in the standard location.........in reality the dissy is just a carbine with the front site at the rifle location.......longer sight radius and full length handguards..........Cutting a20 inch barrel back to 16 can cause gas and or reliability issues........most reputable gun smiths dont rec anything shorter than 18 inches.......... |

Simply chopping a 20" barrel without doing some gas port work will make it unreliable. Gas port needs to be opened up - .11 works about right. Del Ton makes them. I don't think they'd be selling them if they were completely unreliable. |

Agreed........Gas port needs work if you are cutting a 20 down to 16.........Its cheaper to do it that way......saves on the requirement that you need an additional gas block or front sight........... |
