Looking at assorted 11.5 uppers for my SBR and Keymod "rails" look interesting.
School me on advantages/disadvantages compared tp standard quad rails. |
|
Before the KMR came out I was skeptical about Keymod, but once I found out the a 13" rail would weigh 7.7oz I jumped all over it. I'll just repeat what has been said which is that Keymod is lighter, easier to attach/re-attach mounts, and more comfortable to hold imo. |
|
i've been considering one too, but my samson evo rail put a bad taste in my mouth regarding modular rails. whereas i'm in love my samson star quad rail.
the thing i like about keymod better then other modular rails is that your accessories can bolt directly to the rail, no need for picatinny pieces if it's a true keymod accessory, without the use of backing plates like the evo rail needs, which are a pain in the butt. the other thing i hated about my evo rail is i'd have to remove my railed gas block to slip the rail off, my quad rail never needed that since it was a 2 piece clamped design to the barrel nut. and i'm not too familiar with the various keymod rails and how they attach. the weight savings might be worth it if you're carrying this thing for 10 hours like someone else mentioned, but for me i didn't even notice the weight difference. |

Slimmer diameter, better feel. Light, only use rails where you need. I went from Troy quad rails to Noveske NSR. Best new addition yet. Very light and a more comfortable grip. I carry a 10" SBR for 10 hrs a few days a week. What requires you to do that? |

I can't figure a better way of attaching panels like the NSRs to a forearm, so keymod it is.
It is an open source TDP, and the biggest players are working toward it like they did with picatinny rails. There's entirely too much industry support for it to go away now. 2 of my rifles do not wear keymods currently. One is a MK18. The other is equipped with a Centurion rail that I bought from a good friend of mine. And one more will be wearing Magpul soon. It's just not built yet. |

I really like my 11.5'' with KMR. Very light weight, no issues with mounting things that I might want on it. Feels better in the hand.. doesn't heat up too quickly but I wear gloves when I shoot it most of the time anyhow. http://i.imgur.com/stwUlg9.jpg See, that's exactly what I've been thinking. |

I've got a couple of Seekins Precision MCSR V2 15" rails, and a KAC quad @ 10". The Seekins are MUCH lighter and more comfortable. The ID is @ 1.6" so my can fits in nicely in the 300AAC SBR. The 15" rail with barrel nut is only 10oz.

M-Lok might be a consideration as well. They will probably become the new standard. Rails with M-Lok slots also look better/cleaner than rails with "keyholes" in my opinion. I went with the Geissele Mk 8 rail and couldn't be happier. This. M-Lok does it better. The new Geissele rail is state of the art. |
| At first I didn't like the looks. Then I bought a URX4 and saw the light. I wanted 2 small rail sections. The smallest I found was 5 slot NSR rails. They bolted up perfectly and I was hooked. I owned a DD MFR for a while and had nothing but problems with it. I liked the concept but the design was flawed. Love it or hate, I think it's safe to say keymod will be around a while. I installed a BCM KMR on a friends rifle and it was very nice as well. Don't think I'll ever own another quad rail. |
|
You will find plenty of folks who hate on the keymod.
I have both, but prefer the Noveske NSR keymod (and have 2 of them) for it's light weight and slim profile. I don't run a lot of accessories, so having full rails on sides and bottom are a huge waste for me. I rather put just a few sections of rail where I actually need them. YMMV. |

Check out a 10" m-lok from ALG Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Read the big thread on these handguards on TOS specifically about the mlok. There are issues. The only issue on M4C related to M-LOK was that one manufacture had to machine flat surfaces into the back end of their round handguard in order to keep using the M-LOK name and logo. That rail is now redesigned and in full compliance with M-LOK standards. Other than that the system is working as designed. Cam nuts used in M-LOK have been around in the aerospace industry for decades and is a proven concept. We made a fairly comprehensive FAQ that covers M-LOK in depth if you want to check it out. http://magpul.commercev3.com/downloads/M-LOK_Tips.pdf
