I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but the search here doesn't cooperate for me.

In order to be a rifle (non-SBR) what does the length need to be?

Would this be a pistol/SBR or would it be long enough to be a rifle? http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-10-5-5-56-lightweight-m-lok-slant-12-freedom-upper-with-bcg-or-ch.html

The description of that upper tells you exactly what you need to know:

It is the customer's responsibility to be aware of all applicable laws and regulations regarding purchase and ownership of uppers with a barrel length of less than 16".

Yea, you can buy any size barrel under 16", but I would buy a PSA pistol lower first* and that way you're legal without dealing with the NFA SBR BS. Just never attach it to a stocked lower, unless you get the SBR stamp first.

*If you have a regular lower at your home and you order a short barrel upper then that could get you in trouble (doubtful unless you are already under surveillance of some sort lol). But the recommended thing to do is acquire the pistol lower first or along with the short upper.

Always keep a pistol lower in your safe, they are not that expensive and they will cover you just in case.

PSA has one on sale today for $199 with free shipping already has a brace on it.

They also have a complete pistol lower without the brace for $129.
