Hi All,
I know I've seen this question somewhere on this forum but I couldnt find it.   When you pur-
chase a complete upper receiver, does the bolt have to be fitted to it?  Or does the headspace
depend on the barrel fit into the upper?
The reason I ask is because I have a couple of complete bolt assemblys and would like to
purchase a complete upper without the bolt for the cost savings.
Thanks,
Bill

The bolt shouldn't have to be fitted.  Headspace is basically determined by the barrel extension.

It's always a good idea to check the headspace when you swap bolts, but I've done it with dozens of bolts/barrels and never seen one that was out of spec.

Swapping the same bolt between barrels will increase the wear on the bolt.  Its best to spend the $40 or so and have a bolt for each upper.

Bolt carriers can be swapped with no issues.

AR-15s headspace is set at the factory you can't adjust it - just test to see if its 'in spec' or not.  If its 'not' then you need a new bolt and/or barrel.

Thanks for the replys.  I guess I was fixated on headspacing with the  bolt because of bolt
action rifles.
