Ok I have a dumb question... Finishing up my AR Build, Just got my BCM 14.5" barrel, now all I need is my BCG. So I want a Fail Zero BCG, they have the basic Fail Zero BCG kit that comes with everything including the hammer or the carrier only from Fail Zero. http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/bolt-parts/bolt-carrier-parts/bolt-carriers/ar-15-bolt-carrier-group-exo-treated-nickel-boron-prod27448.aspx That's the link to Brownells... Ok question do I need the Hammer from Fail Zero, I assembled my lower already with the Geissele SSA trigger which obviously came with a hammer. Granted it wouldn't take long to switch them out... But the price diff is about $90.00 Opinions? Is the FZ Hammer exactly the same minus the XTO coating? Don't want to mess up the function of a Giessele trigger. Thanks |

First of all the FZ hammer will not work in a two stage trigger. Secondly, if you are like me and just have to have a fail zero bcg then get one. They are not necessary and the only thing "magic" about them is they clean easier, but if you are cleaning regular and not waiting a couple thousand rounds to clean its a waste. I say this because I bought 1 fail zero. It's good. But from now on I will be buying quality chrome lined bolts from decent manufacturers. Windham allows your to back order at $134 and you will get it in a week or two. Quality chrome lined bcg for less $$$. But I get it, I had to learn the hard way and spend extra money on something that wont really help me in the long run. It will not hurt me either so its a push. Also when cleaning your fail zero make sure not to use solvents that hurt nickel, EG hoppe#9!!! But don't pay for the hammer if you are gonna stick with a 2 stage, it won't work.

Just order the Fail Zero BCG minus the hammer. Most of us who buy NiB BCGs will never buy another that is not NiB.
The NiB is slick and does clean easier, but mostly is a tough, durable coating. It's not about need, if it was, most of us would only have one rifle. I prefer NiB, and I predict more and more will be sold as many manufacturers offer NiB now. You will not need the NiB hammer since you have the SSA. |

Different strokes, we all like different things. Merely pointing out if you are thrifty and like value you may not want to waste money on a coating. It is a good coating, but you will end up oiling it anyway. We all like different things, and I predict Chrome lined bcg's aren't going anywhere for a long time. I like my fail zero, but most people will not wear out a chrome lined bcg over a life time. And if they do replace the gas rings as they go first, and then replace the bolt. The carrier ought to be gtg for a long time. Therefore, while some may like it and choose to spend their money how they choose, if they aren't aware of the full story I want to make them aware. NIB is not a magic pill, it is a neat toy that DOES REQUIRE OIL to continue to run on and on. And it must be cared for properly, like not using hoppes #9. Enjoy whatever BCG you buy, weigh all your options if money is an issue. Happy shooting. Quoted: Just order the Fail Zero BCG minus the hammer. | Hoppes shouldn't' hurt these at all. Hoppes will only cause the older style of playing to flake because the steel was firs placed with copper, then the nickel over that. Hopped weakens the copper. Since there is no copper in NiB or any electro less nickel plated object, it stands to reason that even soaking should be fine. |
