I'm hoping one of you Gizmo Gurus can help me out... I bought a Streamlight TL3 (impulse buy) and for giggles, I mounted it to my DPMS 308 rail. Before I go out and shoot it set up like this, anyone have an idea if I'm gonna recoil shock the Streamlight into oblivion? No, it wasn't the most expensive light, but it ain't a maglite either. I bought it because it's 120 lumen output blinded me in Gall's showroom...just HAD to have it! If it won't hold up under recoil, I plan to use it for a glovebox/ccw accessory. (yes, I also know that Surefire rules for this application...I'm not looking for brand name preference--just if it will work or not) Thanks in advance! Ron |

well, since no replies, I tried it out. (I figure if it breaks, it's still under warranty) Here's a small range report. Cost was about $20 more than my wife's SF 6P at $73. The TL3 is about 2x as bright. I could easily identify rabbits at nearly 100 yds with the TL3, and could only see eyes glowing with the 6P. Controls are identical to the 6P--rotating switch and momentary press. I used a piece of inner tube to shim up the 1" cheapo ring to mount the TL3 to my rifle, which I assume also works as a shock absorber. I have fired 80 rds of Portuguese 308 surplus with the TL3 mounted and it still works. I guess I'm not going to spend the big $$ for the M3 after all...at least not just yet. |
| I intended to chime in on this when you first posted but wasfeeling a bit 'under the weather' and never got back to it. As you stated it will work and the TL-3 has TERRIFIC performance at great price! There is one thing to mention though for weapons use and even general use, be sure to check the bulb alignment and if needed center it so it won't touch the reflector otherwise you could have a failure if hot. |
| thanks for all the replies. I've put another 400 round downrange with the TL3 on board, and it still works. I'm a very satisfied Streamlight owner, and plenty impressed with the durability-to-price ratio. (although I sure wish I had seen Botach's sale before I bought...I'd have 2 lights instead of 1!) |
