I have a stainless barrel that i think i'm going to duracoat before i install it. im questioning the best way to do this with my setup. i was planning on using a set screw type gas block and dont want to duracoat the barrel with the barrel nut on. I'm guessing i wont be able to get the gas block on without messing up the finish though.
should i get a clamp on gas block instead? or just duracoat the barrel with the nut and gas block on?

why would you want to use a finish that is so fragile? if you can't get the gas block on without scarring up your paint try cerrakote or gunkote, both will easily withstand a gas block installation.

I have used both and I think Duracote is better but I just tape off the sections I don't need the paint and go on..... But I let it cure for at least a week before I assemble.( mainly Ak.s)

A week or more. After 1 week I could still get some "dings" on the finish (A1 upper, no deflector), it didn't chip off but it did leave a slight mark. As long as you "go easy" on the Duracoat on that part of the barrel you should be fine. Don't Duracoat the INSIDE of the gas block that might add too much.
Try assembling it now, that should give you an idea. If it is hard to get on now, it will be worse later. I think I bought the Duracoat with the SL (warning, the finish with the SL will be slightly darker than without). It doesn't add thickness but it has a built in lubricant. It might help. You can always sand down the inside of the gas block to remove some of the manufactures finish, It shouldn't take a lot.
I would also tape off the barrel extension, any threads and block any openings (gas port in barrel, block, crown etc..).
If this is your first time doing this you should head over to the refinishing forum, a lot of good advise there. Also the finish will only come out as good as the prep work. I took me longer to prep the parts than it did to paint them. Good luck.
