I need a good compact rifle sight for my new build. Can't go wrong with EOTECH right?
So I am seeking feedback on the EOTECH 511. There is one being sold through my local gun club for about $300. It has the standard 65 moa circle / 1 moa dot reticle and standard brightness adjustments. Simple, Simple, Simple.... I like that about it. It is 4 inches short... I like that too. It takes "N" batteries is the only downfall I see with it ( and the battery life in comparison to other newer Eotechs) It is almost unused as it was mounted on a home defense shotgun previously which he left behind the couch for his wife while he was away on Wal-Mart business trips for the past 3 years. This guy is honest and credible, so I think I would be getting a pretty great deal. I am on a time crunch though because he will sell it out from under me by Monday afternoon if I don't respond. Any advice would be appreciated. J |

save up a little more and just buy a new xps they are light years ahead of the older 51x series and smaller than the 511 Light years ahead? In what way please? I am seriously not good at researching these sights. I have tried and tried... Don't know if it's light years ahead, but the XPS series has side control buttons (easier to reach if you're using rear sights or a magnifier) and the single CR123 battery is transverse-mounted to supposedly solve the reported recoil-induced battery spring compression problem. HTH... Tomac |

That's the only Eotech you DON'T want. If you want compact get a XPS. All you need to know is the N batteries PLAIN SUCK. And they drain when off. You'll be replacing batteries every month. Trust us if you want Eotech stay with the AA batteries or 123 batteries. |

I have had 2 Eotechs, one was the N battery 511 and the other was a CR123 556
I liked the 566 but did not like the 7mm raised base since I used low-pro flip-up BUIS, and it messed up my check weld. I HATED the 511 due to the poor battery life. I could run through a set of batteries in less than a month, but that was the only real problem I had with It. The rear buttons did not bother me. With that said, I would recommend one of the new XPS sights, better battery life and smaller than the 511, without the 7mm raised base |
| I've had two 511s with the N batteries and never had an issue. i have one right now. I've had it for 4 years. I had the other one for two years. I've also had the .308 reticle version, two 512s, and one 556. Never had an issue with any of them. Most were traded with the guns, one was sold with a gun it was on and one was stolen. I've had AA battery models, N cell battery models, and CR123 battery models. I could never tell the difference with any of them. I only run Surefire batteries, or Energizer top of the line and no rechargeable batteries. I change the batteries in the ones I have now every 2-3 months whether it needs it or not, and it's never needed it. |
| I have a 511 on an AC556. While I like the compact size and durability, it doesn't do what I need it to. Not only are the N batteries picky, but the full auto fire causes the springs to compress, and causes the reticle to flicker, and in time, turn off completely. In semi auto it may not be such a big deal.... but full auto? Not cutting it. Probably sell it one of these days for one that's battery is perpendicular to the barrel. |

Thanks for all the replys guys.
I went down to my LGS and they had an Eotech 553 with dual ARMS throw levers...used for $450. No case or papers or anything. They are usually pretty trustworthy so I think it is legitimate. My only question is, what could have happened to it prior to being sold back to the store? I spoke to one of the ARFcom members via email, and he offered me some advice. Thanks Paul. I will think it over and come up with an answer tomorrow. I really want to get this bought before the end of the week. |

That's a great price for a 553 if its in good shape!! That's kind of a tough one to pass up on if its in excellent shape. The 553 will offer you a lower 1/3 co-witness, NV compatible, and its bomb proof!! I run the same optic on my full time entry rifle. Heavy but I love it!!! |

Went by the LGS at lunch and talked to the guy again. I just get a bad feeling about the sight. They haven't even cleaned it up or anything. Still has smudges on the optics and dirt down in the battery latch area. With no warranty and no way of knowing this wasn't dropped off a building or something. I think I will play it safe and save my pennies to buy a new-in-box model.

There are a lot of Fakes out there so be careful who you get one from. I use a 511 because that was the smallest one EoTech made at the time. I prefer the EXPS models they are very nice and better made. Here is a link to the EXPS 2. Here is a link to the EXPS 3 ![]() Mike @ CST |

HTH... Tomac FYI, I recently had this problem with my 512. EOTech was good about working with me to put new springs and contacts in, but I am still not sure if I can depend on it with my life. I really like the EOTech display however. I basically formed some copper in a fashion to wedge between the batteries and contacts, taking the springs out of play. This "fix" will suffice until I can save up the $$$$$ to buy an EXPS. |
