Can you just put on one the upper or do you need a mount?

You CAN just mount it to the upper, even though a lot of people will recommend a LaRue mount. I like mine.

It depends on if you want absolute or lower 1/3 cowitness. I run mine directly on the upper.

Save your money and just mount it directly to the upper.  I am very happy with mine mounted that way.

I just put mine on my flat top, screw it down with teh allen wrench (dumped the knob)and leave it.  I have no need or ever forsee a reason why I would ever take it off.

I had mine on an ARMS #38 rail. Way too high up. The built in #40 wouldn't reach it and so I dumped the #38, mounted it directly on the upper receiver and it sits in perfect co-witness with my rear and front sight.
