Ok, so I have been reading for 4 hours today here on this site about scopes. I like the recommendations but I have a couple questions on the EOTech.

1. Will I be able to use this sight out to say 300 yards?

2. When I look at SWFA, they are all the same price (except the F version) so what is the diffrence...you know between a Sage Less-Lethal Reticle a FN Less-Lethal Reticle, etc. etc.

Peace

Rick

1. Yes you can use it out to 300 yards.
2. Why in gods name do you want a less lethal reticle, those are for less lethal platforms only not for an AR. You just need a standard 5 whatever series, depending on if you want N batteries with less battery life or the double A ones with longer battery life.  Then you need to decide if you need nv capability for use with NV devices not with the naked eye. You need a revision f its longer battery life and i think its supposed to also have fixed some other problems with some sights being cockeyed. I havea  512 and am very happy with it.

Ok, thanks, I did not know the difference, the AA is what I think I would go with I'm just not sure how these work out at distance....maybe someone has a laymen's explanation, I am used to an adjustable scope so I assume this would be for lack of a better term, what you see is what you get when viewing at any distance?? i.e. they don't bring anything in closer correct and if I want to do some 100 plus yard target shooting and not a lot of CQB this probably is not the scope for me?? Maybe?

+1

I also just got a 512 i love it

depends on what you want to hit at 300yds

this is my first zero magnification optic

I'd say man sized at 300 OK

But i don't thing I'll be shooting for tight groups at even 100 with the EoTech

that what i have the 10fp .308 for

The 1MOA central dot is nice if you do want to do some delicate work now and then.  Adjusting the brightness will vary the size of the dot as well to some degree and reduce any "blooming" from having the setting too high in a given lighting condition.

I would say that the eotech is for CQB, im using it on a patrol type rifle with BUIS, which if i needed to reach out and hit something at 300+ yards i can just switch over to that. its mostly for cqb, if you planning on using it to shoot for distance it and aimpoint are not the thing for it. They have a magnifier out now for it, but i dont think that it is worth it at all, especially with the quality glass that you could buy for what a complete eotech or aimpoint+ magnifier setup would cost.

ETA ive shot both the aimpoint and eotech and i find the eotech to be better in several areas

1. Price
2. speed
3. Accuracy
^ im sure some aimpoint people will disagree with me but its what works with me. Some people with astimatism have problems with it from what ive heard, however i have pretty bad astigmatism and dont have a problem with it, im sure it would be clearer if i didnt but i still shoot fine .

Eotecs are nice and all but I would rather use an aimpoint. If you need to shoot at somthing 300 yards away they sell the 3xmagnifier for it. Its an expensive combo tho.

Is the 511 worth buying?

I have an EOTech 512 and love it - I don't need night vision and I prefer the cheaper, more available, and longer lasting AA batteries.  Unless space on your rail is a major issue, I'd go w/ the 512.  For 300yd shots though you'll want some kind of magnifier (or shall I say, if you can shoot 300yds w/ irons, you'll be fine w/ the EOTech by itself, but my vision isn't that good so I like a magnifier).  EOTech is coming out w/ both a 3x and 4x magnifier in April.  The 3X will be $399 w/ a fixed mount or $499 w/ a flip-to-side mount.  Cheaper than an aimpoint 3x as the aimpoint doesn't come w/ a mount.

I'm using my 512 w/ a 2.5x magnifier out to 200 yards and it works beautifully.  If you have money and will be shooting further, the EOTech 557 has holdover dots for distances out to 600m

http://www.opticsplanet.net/eotech-holographic-weapon-sight-557-ar223.html#

Then you can add the 4x magnifier for ~$800.

One final point, the A2 front sight post is 4 MOA, the EOTech is 1 MOA.  So it'll obscure less of the target at 300 yards.  But the irons have the benefit of being able to easily adjust the rear sight for distance - you'll have the manually hold over the EOTech.

However (read your response further down), if you're not doing close quarters or tactical stuff (fast acquisition), I'd go w/ a classic scope.  My guess is the EOTech and magnifier combo will be way more expensive than a good scope.

My $0.02,

Chris

Thanks folks, you have shown me that the EOTech is not the right match for me, maybe on my next AR. For now I will stick with a standard scope.....now the decision is even more confusing when you go to standard scopes

I think U will be hard pressed to shoot a "group" at 300 yards w/o magnification. U are asking too much I think.

Will U hit the target at all at 300 yards. Maybe - as said above a mansized target. But, that's awfully far for a non magnified sight.

Agreed, but I have decided to get an AR10 also for longer range shooting, that I will invest in some higher end optics that I have learned from others here are very good....

Gotta sell the Motorcycle to get the AR10 though...

It's just after deciding to go with an AR10 also I figured the EOTech will work for me...I do have BRD though
