So, here's my problem. New rifle is a CMMG M4 flattop with the fixed front sight. I'm going to mount an EOTech 512 to it, and I'd like to get a BUIS to go with it.

My questions are thus:
1) Will a MagPul MBUS work with the fixed front sight?
2) Does said MagPul have a short- and long-range aperture, or just one?
3) Is the LaRue/Troy BUIS worth the $90 difference, given that the EOTech will be my primary sight?

Thanks, all!

To answer, 1) Yes, it will. 2) I dunno. 3) Depends on your preference and the intended use of the rifle.

If you tell us what you're using the rifle for, that may influence your sight selection.

i've never used the magpul sights, but plastic sights don't excite me. i have a 512 on a gg&g mount and a Troy folding buis. and have no issues with them. imo troy sights are worth the xtra $.

Once you use the EOTech. you won't want to use the BUISs

I chose the Troy rear sight in the case that my EOTech 557 goes bad at the worst possible time.
I do not have to worry so much as I know that the Troy rear sight is all metal. Worth it IMHO.

Purpose of use - range target shooting firearm but may be called upon to defend my family and myself.

1) yes
2) yes
3) It's up to you to decide if it's worth it, the MBUS is a good sight, the Troy is better.  I wouldn't go with a fixed sight (versus folding) like the LaRue when using with an EOTech, unless you have the EOTech on a riser for a lower 1/3 co-witness.

ETA: if you are referring to the folding Troy sight with the "LaRue" logo, disregard my last sentence, I thought you were talking about the LaRue fixed BUIS.

But you'll have to once you pull up to the range and realize your eotech has been on for 3 days... no ring of death for you....

Awesome, thanks for all the answer!

Guess I'll just call on Monday and find out about the apertures on the MBUS...

??

It auto shuts off @ 4 or 8 hours depending on the button you use to turn it on.
The reticle blinks for 5 seconds when you first turn it on if you're under 20% battery life.

I don't see how the situation you described could happen.

Alright, just one more stupid question... Do I need a mount for the EOTech (a la LaRue?) or will the sight just mount directly onto the rail on the flattop?

As for my setup (EOTECH 557 with 3x FTS) and no riser the Troy BUIS folds right under.

I already answered that question, yes it has both large and small apertures.

The MBUS has both small and large apertures. You see the small one most of the time, but flip it forward to put it down, exposing the large aperture only.

OP, you can mount the 512 directly to the flattop using the supplied mounting screw. This will give you an "absolute cowitness," meaning the dot on the EOTech will sit directly atop the front sight post when the iron sights are lined up.

Using a riser or separate mount will give you a "lower third cowitness," meaning your iron sights will be visible in the lower third of the EOTech glass. Some people prefer this setup (especially when using a fixed rear sight) as it gives them a less cluttered sight picture.

that's because you're too busy deciding which of the dozens of ar's you have to bring to the range

I have an Armalite M-15 Carbine with a removable carrying handle and fixed front site. I have an Eotech 512 and ARMS 40-L rear BUIS installed and I like this combination a great deal and would recommend it to anyone!

i got the eotech 512 and the eotech g23fts 3x mag. I use the troy folding buis. no need for any risers and the front sight isn't even noticed. The mag fits over the buis with no ptoblems. The troy foldind buis can be found for $100.

When set-up for the lower 1/3 cowitness, the aiming dot will still "sit on top" of your front sight post when viewed properly through the rear aperture.

That's the magic of a parallax free holographic sight.

I have a couple of the Magpul rear sights and I like em.' I find that half the price of most rear BUIS they do the job well. One thing I like about them is that you can leave the small aperature in either the up or down position when folded down. That way, you can flip up your sight and instantly be on the large or small aperature, whichever your situation might dictate.

Other sights, the ARMS 40L comes to mind, require you to have your small aperture the default when you flip them up, which may leave you hunting for the small hole in the aperture at close ranges. May not be a big deal to you, though.

Please take into consideration this info comes for a range-shootin', beer can bustin', steel target blastin' guy not someone in the military or a contractor. So, as always, your mileage may vary.
