I need opinions on preferences for AR optics. I have an EO-tech and an ACOG, but cant decide which to use as my primary setup. I have an EO-Tech for the further shots that I use in conjunction with an 3x Aimpoint magnifier on a quick release mount for the closer shots, and then of course an ACOG that i would use by itself. The downside is the batteries, but a vertical grip that holds spares solves the problem. And with the EO-tech and Aimpoint setup, I have back up iron sights that i could use by flipping the magnifier to the side if the eotech went down. Opinions?

The whole concept of the m4 is modularity. We tailor or weapons to the mission, sometimes even switching out entire uppers. Basic answer is set up for the shooting type you will doing the most of as in distance, engagement types, etc. Also recomend using Larue mounts as they are the best for switching with minimum change of impact

It depends on your shooting preference for short ranges the 1X dot sights are prefered by most users, medium ranges either dot optics with magnifiers or ACOG or low powered optics and long ranges for high powered scopes.

My preference are under 100 m range which are the most common combat distance so I mainly use my EOTech and Aimpoint dot sights, I also have a magnifier but I rarely use it.

I'm going to get an ACOG later on when I finished my AR build projects but I know ahead of time that I won't use it much but they're nice to have just in case they're needed.

Here's a good article about fighting carbine optics.

I prefer no magnification on my primary user carbine. It's just faster for me.

The likelihood of needing a magnified optic in a SD scenario is extremely small.

Really.... I wonder when everybody and their cousin decided they needed to have an optic on their fightin' rifle/carbine...?

When I was in the armed forces (early 80's) I never even saw an optic. The only guys who used "optics" were snipers...
We lowly infantry were expected to shoot 6" groups at 200yrds with our iron sighted 7.62mm FNC1A1's

Question: American soldiers.... When they go through their basic training be they USMC, Army... whatever, do they start with optics on their rifles?
'Seems every pic y'see of guys in Iraq or A'stan they are using someing other than irons...

Bring back the irons!!!!

You have not effectively described what the intended use(s) for your "primary setup" will be; without such information, it is impossible for anyone to make a [hopefully] informed recommendation.

Personally, I'd pick an ACOG [even a 31 or 01] over an EO every time regardless of shooting situation, simply from a reliability perspective; I like shit that works all the time, or as closely so as is reasonably possible.  If the discussion were between an AP and an ACOG, then it might be a bit different if the intended use was primarily or exclusively <50m.

He said *magnified* optics.  Red dots are better than irons.  There is no comparison.  The only reason not to run a T-1 or H-1 is if you cant afford it.  Change the battery every few years and forget about it.  The majority of soldiers are carrying Aimpoints of Eotechs.  Magnified optics are issued as well (the USMC seems to love them), but not in the same numbers from what I have seen.

In a self defense situation a red-dot sight is the best choice.
