About six years ago I went to a gunstore that was selling a great looking Colt SP1 on consignment. Atop this rifle was an optic that the store owner called an ACOG. I looked through the optic and was amazed. There was no magnification, the sight picture was totally black with a red dot in the middle. The store owner said you keep both eyes open, look at the target with the off eye and put the red dot on it with your shooting eye. He had a mounted bass on the wall that made a perfect target. This, of course, looks nothing like the pics that you guys have posted of modern ACOGs featuring cross hairs, donuts, and chevrons. So was this thing really an ACOG? I have never seen anything like it since. |
That looks very similiar to what I remember. Anyone have any info on the thing? |

Armson OEG was one of the first "red dot" sights. They work well but are utilized differently from the red dots of today. First, they work best when "snap" shooting... i.e. throw the weapon up sight and fire. They don't align as an aimpoint does and the movement of your head will change the POI. Hence, the OEG requires practice all the time and a cheek weld that is always in the same place. With practice OEG's can be very effective but you will not be pleased with sighting if you attempt to use as a scope, target will look like you were using a shotgun! Hope this helps. |
