| When did the DoD start modding them with wrench flats? I am asking about the early ones with holes in them. |

Wonder if Colt modded them in the factory rather than throwing them out and buying new parts? Quoted:

The mod shows up in either the 1964 or 65 XM16E1 manual. I forget off hand, my Buddy Nick has the manuals right now. Wonder if Colt modded them in the factory rather than throwing them out and buying new parts? Theory (ONLY theory) is that Colt started modding them, then armorers did them at a lower level. That's why you see some that look very nicely done (like a factory would do) and others look like the were hand cut. |

My 1968 TM manuals are the first ones I have that don't show the spanner wrench hole in the extension, the 63TO, 64TM, and 66TM manuals show the hole.
The 64TC and 66FM don't have the parts breakdown pictures. Sorry I couldn't be a bigger help, I don't have any 65 manuals. |

I understood it the other way around - that it was being done at a field level, beginning with NSW and the request for flats went up the chain. To me that makes the most sense. I mean, who has a strap wrench on a battlefield? |

Did you pick one up on the EE yesterday? I seem to remember seeing and wishing I had seen it sooner! I'll be interested to know if it is unmolested or has had the wrench flats machined. Nice find. its un moded yah I lucked out thanks! Comes with a no drain hole screw too. |

I'm sure the TM used actual feedback from the in field armorers on how to improve certain parts and which parts needed to be upgraded, changed. Edited for spelling |
