Weird as it may be, on AR-15.com, I spend a great deal more of my time in the SF than in this forum.  I own three AR's and love them and have had BRD since 2000.  Now I have some questions about setups that are getting a lot of attention, it seems.

I like the way the SBR's look.  How reliable are they?  What is your experience with accuracy?  How far have/can you Shot/shoot it with accuracy?  How loud are they?

Gas piston uppers...do they seem more reliable?  Are they easier to maintain?  I have done very little research into this, but it seems that some like it, some don't.

This is not meant to start a pissing match, I'm just looking to build/buy another couple of rifles and I am considering something new to me that I don't know much about.  Thanks for the feedback.

Here's MHO....

For a GP rifle an SBR isnt fit for the job, but for CQC/home defence, its wonderful. An SBR, at range, looses acuatcy due to the barrel length. Many will argue about the gas pressure, but it all comes down to ballistics.

Granet an SBR is very intimidating, useful in CQC, and pretty cool looking.. Overall, the weapon isnt as useful as a longer set up.

As far as gas-piston uppers. They seem to be a great idea, I havent used one before, but would like to, just for curiousity...
I will say, I probably wont use a gas-piston upper in my patrol rifle, simply because thats just one more moving part.

Like you Blake, Im not here to start a pissing match, just stating MHO

How reliable are they? Depends on how well tuned you've got them...buffer weight, extractor, gas port, ammo, etc.
What is your experience with accuracy? Just as accurate as any other barrel length out to 100 yards depending on experience & training of the shooter
How far have/can you Shot/shoot it with accuracy? See above + some have made kills out to 300 yards
How loud are they? What? Say again please? Oh...ya they are some loud sums a' beetches. Get a can if you plan on buying one

I'm building a 9mm SBR with a 5" barrel.  OAL is going to be around 22"  Why 5"?  Technically, it'll be more accurate than a 9mm pistol.  Why?  because you can should the weapon and make it more stable.  That and in the future, I want a silencer to be put on it.

As far as Gas Piston.  There are a lot of AR purists that say DI is better.  I tend to like gas pistons.  HK, AK, FAL, AR-18/180, SA80 & M14 all have gas pistons.  There's nothing wrong with GP.  There's nothing wrong with DI.  I like GP for an AR because it keeps it cleaner and I hate cleaning my weapons.

Well, I don't clean them much anyway.
