Very new to AR's. What is the point of the ejection point cover? Doesn't remain open while in operation? Or is my ejection port spring installed backwards? Some explanation would be very helpful.

Rifles are carried much more than they are fired. The ejection port cover on an AR (or AK for that matter) is closed unless you are firing, keeping debris out of the mechanism of the rifle.
