I''m not sure where to post this question.  I just bought a pair of electronic ear muffs that was on clearance at my Local Wally World.   My question, are these ear muffs design so that you can speak with others and will dampen the sound of a rfile/pistol shot going off like regular ear muffs?  Are there any particular brands that work better than others?

There should be a volume control knob of some sort that activates a small mic in the head phones.  This allows you to hear whats going on around you, but once any noise over a certain dB level occurs, the mic is automatically turned off and they act like normal ear muffs.  They are very effective and very useful for talking to buddies while you shoot or hunting.  Many of them also have an aux jack on them that allows you to play music through them, or hook up a hand radio so you can listen through the muffs as apposed to them blaring out while your in the field.

What brand?  What model? Sordin and Peltor are pretty much the gold standard.

... and Howard Leight are the Bronze standard.  Perfectly good and cheap.

Yes you can hear people talk and they will dampen a gunshot (however plugs under the muffs are still recommended for best hearing protection).
