I have a couple of questions about EoTechs.  I am trying to decide between a 512, 517, of XPS.

Battery life and NV aside, do they all function exactly the same, whether it be a 511, 512, 552, XPS, etc.?

Do they absolute co-witness without a riser (XPS & 512)?

Do they lower 1/3 co-witness with a 7mm riser (517 has this built in).

I am really thinking about the 517 because I would prefer a lower 1/3 co-witness and would also prefer the buttons on the side.

Thanks!

I can only comment on the 512, because that's the only one I have.

My 512 is an absolute co-witness on my flat top carbine without a riser.

If you're thinking down the road about a magnifier, the 517 with the buttons on the side would be nice.

XPS is absolute co-witness.

safehaven,

There are some differences you need to consider:

Size: The XPS will leave you far more rail space (if rail space is a consideration) than the 512 or 517

Co-witness: 517 - lower 1/3 co-witness, easier to operate with a less obstructed view

                 XPS and 512 - absolute co-witness

If you are even considering a lower 1/3 co-witness the 517 is a great buy. It has excellent run time off of (2) 123 lithium batteries and side mounted buttons if you plan on using folding rear sights or a magnifier down the road. The 517 is also affordable!

The 517 is the AA model. The 516 is the CR123 model. Both offer lower 1/3 co-witness.
