Noob question, but I just picked up an EoTech 512 for my RRA with the Dominator 2 mount and I'm not sure how far forward to mount it. What are the pros/cons of placement more forward/back? Is there a trade off?

Thanks, experts!

As far up as you can put it without touching the HG.  When you put a BIS on it and you have it more to the back you will find it hard to turn on/off.

Place it where you are comfortable with it, where you can most easily pick up targets.

Try it in a few locations on the rail and see what you like best.

For me, its usually right over the barrel nut, so I have monolithic rails on everything.

I like the wide field of view so I have mine as far back as the BUIS will allow and still have room to get fingers in there to turn it on and off.

The glass of my XPS2-0 is right over the center of the ejection cover.

If running a BUIS and no monolithic rail, like this:

ETA: I think the newer 512s allow you to mount them further forward then shown in my pic without interfering with the handguards.

Captains1911-
Would you run it further forward if you could?
BTW, that's a great looking rig!

I have mine mounted like this. I can still hit the buttons just fine. If I go back further it gets hard to turn it off with the BUIS flipped up.

I run a 512F with an LT-110 mount, allowing me to get it partially over the Larue 9.0 rail.  I leave room for my 3X Aimpoint magnifier on a LT-649 mount so this is necessary.

I've always liked mine best as far forward on the rail as possible.
