I have an S&W M&P15A with a Troy iron sight in the rear.

I admit that I am a gadget freak and am eyeing the Eotech Holosight.  I'm assuming the appropriate Eotech sight for me is the 511 with the A65 moa reticle.  I see them for about $360 and up.

I am basically a target shooter but am preparing to be a foot soldier in "the great invasion".

The Eotech products see to be the hotest thing out there.

What is everyone else's opinion?  Is Eotech the thing?  Do you agree on the 511 A65 or is something else better?  Is there a better optic altogether?

I love hearing opinons!

1) If you must get an Eotech then get a version that takes AA batteries like the 512.A65 for longer battery life, easier logicstics and fewer problems.
2) I've owned a number of Eotechs and love the reticle. However, Aimpoint does it for ruggedness & battery life (5-7 YEARS of constant 24/7 use on a single battery) and 2 of my 3 Eotechs would drain the batteries while turned off.
My personal choice is the Aimpoint Micro series, very small & light w/typical Aimpoint ruggedness & dependability.
Just MHO...

I currently have an EO Tech 517 winging its way to me to grace my S&W M&P 15OR along with my 'Po-boy' Hendsolt 2.5x magnifier with LaRue flip mount.  Now I just have to wait for Magpul's MBUS to ship to get some backup sights...

I like EO Tech.  Of course, I really like Aimpoints as well, but I like the EO Tech recticle better, and I don't need a sight I only have to change the batteries in for 3 years assuming they are on the entire time.  Yes, Aimpoints are tougher and the batteries last longer, but it comes down to the mission you need the optic to perform, the enviroment you are going to use it in, training in what you have and personal preferrence.

Made my purchase.  A new 512 A65 Rev F with hardcase (Jan 09 production) .....

I researched Eotech vs Aimpoint vs a few others.  I appreciate all the benefits of the Aimpoint but can't justify the higher cost.  I don't think I really need to worry about the ruggedness or the battery life.

I am going to mount the 512 on a S&W M&P15A that has a Troy folding rear sight mounted at the back of its rail.  Any issues with mounting the 512 that anyone is aware of?  If I get to the point of adding a magnifier behind the 512 are there any issues with that?

Any suggestions on mounting / setup?

I just found an indoor range that allows AR15's which prompted me to go ahead and make my purchase now (considering we are under a snow emergency in Cincinnati).  While checking out the range I was able to watch a guy with his MP40.  He seemed to be enjoying himself.

Any advice is appreciated.

I enjoy my eotech 512 and it should serve you well in your application. It will mount up just fine on your S&W, if you ever upgrade to add a magnifier, you may want to boost the 512 up a bit with the Yankee Hill Machine YHM-220 eotech riser to get things in optimal alignment.

As far as mounting suggestions, follow the instructions closely in that a 1/4 turn with a coin is enough.  Don't turn the mounting screw too tight or it will snap.  Since the screw has threads, locktite is a good bet as I've seen more than a few EOtechs go flying in recoil.
Even though the documentation states that remounting the sight is within 1MOA, that hasn't been my experience so the sight stays on the weapon.

Consider the La Rue LT-110 mount.

Not only will it give you a repeatable zero, but it raisaes the sight slightly for a better site picture and give a 1/3 co-witness. Also, the little raised area at the back of it is in an ideal location for a magnifier.

La Rue is the shiznit for mounts.

I use an EoTech 552.  Just changed out the batteries after 2 years––the old ones still worked, just figured it was time.  I have it mounted directly on the receiver with an ARMS 40L back-up which is a very workable set-up.  I selected the EoTech over the other alternatives because of the 1 MOA reticle versus the 2 and 4 MOA for the compeititon.  The ACOG would be an althernative, but a little pricey for a non-professionally used weapon. The Accucam clamping system is a must-have in my view for the EoTech.

Had my eotech out for the first time and shot it at an indoor 25 yard range.  I had zeroed the sight in at home using a laser bore sight and got pretty good results at the range.  Assuming I'm dead zero at 25 yards, what do I really have?  What can I expect when I get outside at 100 yards and up?

It'll change depending on ammo, but you're basically looking at being about 6" high at 100 yards zero'd at 25.

Do yourself a favor. Skip the 25y zero and move directly to 50y zero. Search this forum for IBZ and you'll see why.
Good luck and stay safe.

I have an EOTECH 552 65/1 on a 16" BCM midlength upper.

I would buy another in a heartbeat.
