Looking at a Eotech 512 pros or cons?
I have always used a Aimpoint but wanted to try something different on my wifes AR. Thanks for any input. |

If you're looking for something different, consider running a good LPV in the 1-4x or 1-6x range. Quoted:

All Eotechs have been recalled. I have returned the 3 I had. recalled why? were they repaired, replaced? SO none of the new ones on the shelf are any good? I'm sure someone is looking up one of the many many threads that went on about this recall as I'm typing this. But in a nutshell eotech basically lied to the military about the temperature ranges HWS are good for. Basically if zeroed in mild temp the reticle would drift several moa when shot in below freezing or I. High temp. A few members here said they confirmed this but most didn't. I also loved mine and never experienced an issue but eotech was offering full msrp back on a used optic and I didn't want to be stuck with it when the recall was over. |

Yeah, they said something like -40F or 122F would impact MOA. I'm not too concerned about it where I am.

Yep, there wasn't anything wrong with the two I had (XPS and EXPS), but I didn't want to be stuck with them if something did go wrong, so I returned them. I absolutely loved those Eotechs... This exactly. I am always buying, selling and trading gear and I was afraid my Eotech would have no value down the road. But I loved my EXPS 2.0. |
| so nothing wrong with the one I have (exps) wondering though it was given to me by my father and wanted to know how I could send it in to get the money back for it, I'm interested in an aim point and already have a meprolight for a back up but I don't have a receipt or anything like that just the sight and a case |

My 512 was also one of my favorite sights. I realized when I pulled it out of mothballs a little while ago it had developed an issue as well. Mine was mfg'd 2007 and did indeed end up with the reticle fading out depending on where it was placed in the view window, then it died all together just recently. I was going to send it back to get fixed recently and maybe try it w/ a magnifier and another member reminded me there were issues with them and there was a refund program underway (that part I didn't know). According to EOTech's description of potential issues on their website, it fits the description of moisture incursion.
Supposedly they had addressed the issues in models made after 2014 (I think?) Look here for the story from the horses mouth: EOTech issue description |

This, IMO... the right one will function with all the utility of an RDS for quick/close-in needs on low power and the ability to dial magnification for when that's helpful/needed. |

Just read the Eotech notice to customers which said "There is no repair currently available to eliminate thermal drift. If your HWS experiences a degree of thermal drift that is unacceptable to you, and re-zeroing does not address the issue to your satisfaction, please contact EOTech, as described below, to obtain a refund of the purchase price." So assuming that the thermal drift a no-go for you, the new ones on the shelf are just as broken. |
| I am puzzled by the EOTech situation. Their products have problems that are so severe that they offered owners full refunds yet when I was looking at optical products on MidwayUSA this morning the same EOTech products are still being sold. Can anyone explain why they are still being sold? |

Can anyone explain why they are still being sold? Because people will still buy them. Just slap a "warning" label on there advising people of the issue and keep on raking in the dough. That seems to be Eotech's game plan. |

Can anyone explain why they are still being sold? Only products made before July '14 have the issues apart from the thermal POI shift. All have been remedied except the shift in extreme temp fluctuations. |
