Yea, pretty much the only difference is the battery and NV. With the 556/557 you get a 5.56 BDC, and there are other options for 50 cal and 7.62 BDC on the 552's, but that's it.
I know there are also differences with water depth with the mil models too. For range use, go with the 511 or 512 and you will be happy. I've got all 552's just because some day I might go with NV.........But probably not........ I just wanted the 552's...... |

If you're not going to use magnification I would go for the 512 "revision F" model. You should have plenty of space on your upper receiver for whatever BUIS you want. Also with lithium AAs you'll get well over 1000 hours of battery life.
It doesn't make sense to get the tinier model if you have plenty of space on your rifle for the AA version. |

OK, another question this picture made me think of. Can I mount an Eotech forward of the upper receiver on the handguard? Is it stable enough? This is my rifle I am asking about. http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb218/iannersesian/100_1553.jpg I wouldn't suggest going forward of the receiver. The Free Float rail on there is pretty solid but there is a chance that your zero could change, and in the event it were to loosen up you would be real screwed. |

I wouldn't even bother with the armored 511 at this point.
Just get a Bushnell Holosight and save another $100. You can mount it the same way and has pretty much all the same features as a 511. Maybe a little less battery life, but, nothing your likely to worry about. So you keep an extra set of N cells in your range bag and an extra set in your fridge. Big deal. I know lots of folks with the Holosight and have ZERO regrets. |

And again, this thing will never see any kind of hard use, maybe I'll look into that. |

I have a 512 mounted on this gun. It sits as far forward on the upper receiver as possible so I can access the buttons. This is due to the BUIS and 3X magnifier I have. By the way I also have Troy front & rear BUIS. I like the 512 over the 511 due to availability of "AA" batteries. If my Eo-Tech dies, I grab the batteries out of the TV remote and the wife has to get up and change the channels while I am at the range http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v166/Stalker61/CQB.jpg I like it. Looks like I'd have alot of room if I don't have a magnifier. Sine an Eotech isn't magnified, should it be close to your eye, or further away to use both eyes? |

Anywhere on your upper receiver is ideal. I prefer it right above the mag/ejection port. You shoot an Eo-Tech with both eyes open. The best practice is to "look" at a target with the rifle in the low-ready position, then snap the gun up and put the red ring on the target and fire. |
