I just picked up my RRA stripped lower for $109 locally. I'm looking forward to picking up parts kits etc to build up my first AR type rifle. What I need to know is what special tools do I need to build one. I have the proper tools to rebuild car engines, auto trannies etc. so assume I have the basic hammer, punches etc but I know that there are some specialty tools that I will need. I saw on another post that Olympic arms makes an armorers tool that is multifunction, will this take care of everything? |

Well, I managed to build an Olympic Arms completed-upper kit ($424+S&H from Oly) with: A vise (just a regular woodshop vise) A flat-headed-punch Screwdrivers A hammer crows-foot & torque wrench (for the buffer. I didn't have a socket that would fit). Stuff that any auto-mechanic should have... |
| Te barrel wrench, a breaker bar, vice jaws, and no go gage. You don't need one of thos silly detent tools. Just hold the reciever between your knees and use a small L shaped flat head screw driver to hold the detent and spring down with one hand and then quickly slip the takedown pin into place. This works well and I have yet to launch a pin and spring out into the great beyond in all the time that I have been working on ARs. But make sure that you wear safty glasses, just in case! |
