Is there a method for determing range to target utilizing the A2 sight system? With all of these discussions concerning 0-2 aperture vs small aperture and using the elevation wheel to dial in the correct range, how would a marine/soldier in the field know how far away a target was situated?

Thanks!

Unfortunately not.

However, experience and estimation will get you pretty much within a few yards from 0-300 yards.  The nice thing is that in that range, ballistics are generally in your favor.

At longer ranges, ballistics are not so much in your favor.

I've heard of people trying to invent ranging using the sights, but it is difficult as not everyone sits on the sites in the same way, and the focal planes don't always work out well doing this.

No need.

0-300yds: aim center mass

300-500 9AKA when they look really tiny): If you can actually see them way out there then aim for the top of their head(s) or a little more holdover depending on actual ballistics.

I don't know about you but if somebody is shootin at me I'm not gonna bother screwin around with the sights trying to figure yardage to the nearest foot. Close is good enough. Fast hits are better than gettin hit before you even have the chance to fire a shot.

On the range marines are trained several techniques to estimate range. The most useful way to do so is from experience. After a while you get to know how far 300 meters is. The other useful method, especially in combat, is to fire, and look for the strike of your round in the dirt. Once you see that, adjust accordingly. Other than that there really is no method that works for eveyone.

I loked up some info in the TM that I downloaded some time ago and found that there are various methods for determining range. The only one that incorporated the A2 sight system is that at 300m a man sized target is 1/2 width of the front sight and at 600m that same sized target is 1/4 the width of the front sight.
