Apples and Oranges.  It depends completely on its intended use.

Read this if you haven't already.  Decide what you want out of your optics and the decision will be easy.

+1

Since Im just a CIVI I use a Aimpoint on my LMT M4

Its good  for 0 to 300M  ( I wont be shooting BG at 100yards anyway )

BTW
Im still happy with my OLD ML2 and will use it until it DIES

I would get a M2 or M3 and Extra ammo

Get 'em both! OK someone had to say it.  I like the ACOG, and have a TA31F.  I like the magnification even for 50-100yd shots.  I like the chevron and I like the fact that it is crystal clear and requires no batteries.  I asked my friend who is a Marine how he likes using the ACOG as compared to an aimpoint.  He says he likes the magnification for when they are out in the open for long shots and scanning.  And for CQB he said they just cant the rifle and look down the side of it or point and shoot.  He said when your close enough you really don't need to be looking through an optic.

Aimpoint are very nice but I love ACOGS for an over all setup.

$800 is not "expensive" in the world of optics.  Two different optics for two different primary objectives.

Just to add to the confusion. That $800 will get you into a Trijicon TR-21 with mount.

Two ML2's or M2's.  Or maybe a Leupold MR/T 1.5-5 w/ LaRue mount.

Like others are saying, you need to define the intended use.  Those are two very different optics.  Thus, I didn't vote.
