Please explain to me what the numbers mean and infer on optics and spotting scopes. Say, for instance, 15-45 x 50mm... From what I've been reading the 15-45 denotes that it magnifies 15 to 45 times and the 50mm is the size of the lens. Is this correct? Obviously the more magnification the farther you can see, but how does the size of the lens affect view? Does bigger see further? Basically, I wan't to see my .223 hits on paper at 300 yds. I have an old Bushnell telescope that can't see 'em at 100 yards so I need something better, but as always I have virtually no money so I wanna maximize performance versus price. Explain to me what I need. |

3.5-15x is the magnification range. 50mm is the front object peace of glass. You can have a low cost scope that is an 8-32x50mm vs. a really good high-end scope that max out at 10x and the 10x will see better and can see the 308 hole at 300yds were the 32x will not. The quality of the glass used makes a big difference. The quality of the glass is more important. The 50mm vs. a 40mm: The 50mm will let more light in. The more light in the brighter the image The more light the sharper the image can be. The down side is the to much light washout the image. The bell size plus the magnification are both important. When you have a high powered scope like a 32x the bigger the bell is need to give the right amount of light. The lower powered scope the smaller the bell. On my 5.5-22x50mm Nightforce NXS I find on bright day it is almost to bright to shoot so I cut a hole in a Butler Creek cap ¾” in OD to cut down the amount of light and now I’m able to see the image better. I you would like to call me tomorrow you can and I can explain it better. $50 might get you a mounting ring. I have optics that cost more than the firearm in a couple of cases In addition to the above info, the better quality scopes have a larger exit pupil, which allows more light to actually get to the eye. So magnification, bell diameter, exit pupil, and to some extent tube diameter all contribute to a quality scope. Probably more important than these is the actual quality of the glass and the coatings. You will never be disappointed with a quality optic. fish |

The exit pupil is important on higher magnification scopes also. I was looking for a scope in the 4x14 range and some were 2.something to 4.2. I went with the IOR since it had the larger one. Thats at the higher power. The scope field tends to go black with very little eye movement on the smaller exit pupils like my Leupold 6x18. Like they say you can't get something for nothing and there will always be some trade off. JR |

I just realized that I totally didn't specify that I was looking for a SPOTTING scope... BUT... If there are rifle scopes that would allow me to see the hits at 300 yds that would be f*ckin' OUTSTANDING!!!! Are rifle scopes more expensive than spotting scopes of identical viewing capability (it seems to me that they would be due to the smaller size requirements...)? |
Scopes can do it. I was able to see my 308 holes on an orange target dot out to 300yds with my USO CSGW-ST10 10x scope. ![]() This is not the best spotting scope but it is a good. 223 holes will be hard for any glass. Model 78-1217, MAGNIFICATION 15-45x, OBJ 60mm, Close Focus 30 ft., FOV 125Ft 1000yds @ 15x & 65 ft. @ 1000yds @ 45x, Length is 13”, and weight is 43oz. Also comes with a backpack-carrying bag! Very few left once they are gone they are gone. Was $ 349.95 but now save $68.95 = $280.00 (Not on the website yet.) ![]() Mike @ CSGW www.csgunworks.com [email protected] |
