I've heard a lot about the extractor upgrade kits that include a new spring, black insert, and o-ring.  I've heard so much about them that I went out and bought one (for the price, why not?).  I understand it aids in extraction.  How?  Why?  What do each of the components do for extraction?

My bolt had a blue insert in the extractor.  How does this one differ from the black one?

Thanks in advance.

More down pressure on the rim of the case.  Sort of like packing wedges to make a tight fit.  This helps ensure the extractor does not slip off the rim during extraction.
Dare say you will not notice the difference one way or the other.

bang for the buck its probably the best upgrade you can give your rifle.

The spring presses the extractor harder, so it holds on to the casing tighter.  The insert doesn't do anything, originally it was used to visually identify if the bolt has a rifle spring or a carbine spring.  Not really sure what the O-Ring does, but its supposed to help, so all my bolts have one...

I'm very satisfied with my BCM extractor upgrade kit which I'm just using the extra power 5 coil CS spring on my carbine gas system, it already have a black insert and I didn't use the O-ring for now but will add it later on when the spring gets weaker.

In my opinion and experience the extra power extractor springs are not required on midlength and rifle gas systems but carbine gas systems requires them to function properly.

On my midlength gas and rifle gas system rifles I only need the O-rings which is good enough.

Durometer
Durometer is the international standard for measuring the hardness of rubber, plastic, and most nonmetallic materials. The hardness of a material is its resistance to surface penetration. Harder materials have more wear resistance, but they are also less flexible. Note that an object may fall within more than one scale. For example, a typical shoe heel is 95 Shore OO, 70 Shore A, and 22 Shore D durometer.
