I'm having an issue with FTE with my AR (see my post in the Troubleshooting forum) and am going to add an o-ring on the extractor spring.  Apparently I've got some options.  I can go with the BCM upgrade kit which comes with the spring, a black insert, and an o-ring for $5; I can get an Wolff extra power extractor spring for $11, or I can get a D-fender for $11 bucks.

I'm sure there are many different opinions, but wondering what others would go with and why.  I hope to order on later tonight or tomorrow.

Or just spend $5.60 and share them with your friends.  I like the brown ones, they're easy to recognize.  You don't need a new insert or spring.

A viton oring is a viton oring is a viton oring.  The D-fender looks cool but really doesn't do anything more than a viton oring.  $11 is a joke.

I actually remove the orings from new bolts. I hate them and my rifles run just fine.

I personally would go with the BCM upgrade and only put in the spring and insert.  That will most likely fix the issues, but if the rifle needs even more pressure, then add the o-ring.

I've thrown those $1 Crane o-rings in all my bolts.  Carbine, middy, rifle, no problems so far.  Are they necessary?  Probably not but they do not affect function adversely so they can stay.   YMMV.

Try the BCM extractor kit, first just the spring and buffer.
If you continue to have problems try the o-ring.
But I bet just the new spring will fix your problems.

+1

You want your rifle to run without adding the o-ring. If it needs the o-ring, maybe it needs to be shot a bunch more to break in further...then will not need the o-ring.

Either way, the Bravo Company kit will ensure you are starting over with known good quality parts. You can then trouble shoot from there if needed.

I'm  running BCM and ADCO Crane O-ring on my 16" midlength carbine but it's just my personal preference, without the O-ring it functions fine but I wanted a little bit more extraction force and the O-ring provides the extra force, I also run it on my 20" rifle USGI Colt M16A2 upper runs like a sewing machine.

If you needed more extraction force I would suggest getting the BCM extractor upgrade kit, I use it on my three 16" carbine gas system AR, try it first without the O-ring, if you need more force then use the O-ring.

I had used the Wolff extra power extractor springs in the past but from my experience the BCM extractor springs last longer before they get worn out.

I don't run any o-rings and have not suffered any reliability issues for the lack thereof.

I believe you have some other issue causing your problem. What ammo are you using? Russian .223 is underpowered and fails in lots of AR's.

Are you using plenty of lube? Cleaning the chamber after an outing? Using high quality magazines? Have you tried replacing the standard springs (ejector/extractor) with new std. springs?

Modern AR -15 rifles have an enviable reputation for reliability.

I have had problem mags from several manufacturer's. C-Products magazines are built cheap. I recently had an issue with a D&H. You could see the finish worn off the rear magazine lips where the BCG was rubbing. I Dremeled a little clearance when I got home but haven't been able to try it again since modification. My old Colt magazines always run like a top.

The ammo being used was American Egale 55gr. and the rifled was well lubed and cleaned before the range shoot.
I ordered some springs and such from BCM and will give those a try less o-ring at first.

you have pics of your extractor?  I run the o-ring but its more an insurance than a necessity.

If you can find them locally they are #60, 1/4" OD 1/8" ID.

Those o-rings cost twenty five cents.

To me, it seems odd that a 14.5" midlength would "need" an O-ring.

Extractor Spring Assembly
Mfr. Part: SP64026

I have 2k rounds on one of these right now with no issues thus far. I'd recommend them for anyone who is looking to run without extra stuff under the extractor.

Went to the range today and fired three mags (one PMAG, one C-Products and one D&H) with out a hitch.  I used the BCM spring and insert with out the o-ring.  It was a fun day at the range.

Thank you for all the comments.
