Extruded upper? > Build It Yourself

Some time ago I saw a post regarding a new low cost flat top upper. IIRC, it was made from an extrusion with no forward assist, ejection port cover, etc.. Searches on extruded and extrusion come up blank. Can anyone flesh this out? Manufacturer and distributor? Any help appreciated, thanks!

Never heard of it, but I guess it'd be possible.. Personally, I'm not too fond of the alloys used for extrusions, compared to those used in forgings in a firearms application..

I think the cheapy DPMS rifles use an extruded upper to keep cost down... not sure if available as an upper only.

I think you're describing the DPMS Lo-Pro, or at least that's what I've heard.

they have been made since 1992 by Rocky Mountain Arms and by RND Machining...both in colorado. Extremly high quality and harmonically balanced and very strong 7071 T-6 alloy. The refused to sell to DPMS or sell parts so DPMS ripped off the design..lowered price and quality.

Thanks guys. What I remembered looks exactly like the the upper on the Rocky Mountain pistol and very similar to the DPMS Panther Bull Extreme. Looks like they aren't for sale as components on either site though.

Extrusions are used for uppers because it's really cheap. It's more expensive to use forgings. I know ASA, DPMS and Knight's are using them and suppose others too. I think they look homely.

I have a DPMS Hi-Pro upper on a B-M lower.

The upper does appear to be an extrusion, but the machine work on the basis extrusion is superb. The black teflon finish matches the Bushy lower pretty close. It's very slightly more glossy. Nice tight fit between the upper and lower and no problems after nearly 1500 rounds. I like the simplicity of no F/A and no dustcover. The Young bolt carrier fits nice and "snug" with minimal slop.

So what's wrong with an extrusion in a non-combat, varmint rifle ???

Hey, don't feel so foolish; it took me a week to find those!

DPMS's website isn't the most user friendly store to browse.
