I'm new to the "Railed" world.  In fact, I'm not there yet and as with everything else AR, there are too many choices.  However, I'd like to get some clarity on some basics.  Are these true statements?

1.  The rail system should also function as a free float tube.

2.  The front sight should never be mounted on the tube/rail.

3.  The front sight gas block should not have anything but the front sight mounted on it.

4.  The sling should be mounted on the the FFRail and not on the front sight.

If these are true, then all I need in a rail system is a lower rail for the post grip and light.  I need a short side rail (on one side or the other) near the sight for the sling mount.  The top rail is handy but not essential because you can use a scout rail.  Anything in front of your optic would block your FOV anyway.  Seems like everything else would be covered with panels or not railed at all.

What else would you want weighting you down?

I'm sure these are VERY stupid questions to y'all but what am I missing?

YES and you just described a SIR bi-level system.

I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY WITH #'S 1, 3, AND 4.

#2? KNIGHT'S MAKES A DECENT FOREND RAIL FLIP UP FRONT. TROY INDUSTRIES PROMISES TO DEBUT ONE AT THE SHOT SHOW THAT VERY WELL MAY BECOME "THE" FOREND RAIL FLIP UP FRONT.

WHO KNOWS WHAT "OTHER" DESIGNS LURK IN THE MINDS OF "OTHERS" OUT THERE?

The only reason not to agree with #1 would be due to a lack of funds.  The non-FF handguards are generally cheaper than the FF hanguards.  If you can afford it, definitely get a railed handguard that is FF.

As for #2, if you are talking about a FF handguard, some models are rigid enough to mount a front sight to the rail.  Seen a number of rifles with a front sight attached to a KAC FF RAS and have not heard of any problems, mostly likely because the sight is being used as a backup only.  It it necessary that the handguard is properly installed for this to work, though.

For #3, I'll be vague by saying it all depends.

If you have a FF handguard then I think everyone would agree with #4.  Attaching the sling to the barrel will basically negate the biggest benefit of the FF handguard.

I would generally agree with everything else you have said as far as how to use the rails.
