I am looking at buying an FN pre-ban upper from a friend. How can I tell if it is in fact "FN"? There are no markings of any kind on this upper; on the barrel or the reciever. He also told me it was a 1/10 twist. Can anyone out there shed any light on this and tell me what I am really looking at? Need help, thanks.

Apparently FN never sold to the public.  The going theory is that a "FN upper" could have been made for FN by another company and then declined by FN......the company then sells it as an FN.  Another scenario is that it is FN and "fell of a truck".  Many uppers do not have markings so telling what you have might be hard.

If it was FN, what type markings would it have and where?

It would be marked FNMI right next to the muzzle. It would also show the twist which is 1/7 and cal 5.56. It would be chrome lined as well.

To my knowledge FN never made a 1/10 barrel.

Your friend is either confused, was given bad info or full of it.

It's an "FN" 'cuz he don't "FN" know who made it.

Ditto.

There was a post last month detailing these facts about FN not making anything on the civilian marekt, legally that is. Heck there have been many posts stating the facts.

There was a particular thread where one of the design engineers specifically stated that a few of the products out there were bogus, fakes, and knockoffs.
