How much material are you guys removing when doing the flashing on the FSB?
Are you going completely flat on the front & back? I'm using a pneumatic angle grinder, starting with 220 and working my way into emery type wheels. (Course, medium, fine) |

If thats all you did & it looks that good, then there's no reason to go any further than I have.
My OCD side keeps telling me to smooth over the sides as well to give it a sharper profile. RBR doesn't give you a close up shot of the 601 & it looks like the sides have been smoothed flat to give it a flatter sharper profile. Then again it could be me needing glasses.

I studied all the pictures of originals I could find. Some were ground down more. I think it was just a matter of the machine operator and the particular FSB. some FSBs had a more flat back or a rougher casting and needed more grinding. I sorted through my modest collection of FSBs and selected the one that had the finest details, mo molded in code, and a pleasingly rounded backstrap. Then I removed only the material that was necessary.

Yup, I should add that mine is on an XM16E1 clone. I wasn't trying to replicate a cast FSB, Just an early forged one. I have a thread on it some where. Here's your XM16E1 thread, SF. |

Hey Frankenstien
The one you sent that I parked for you looked prety close to the original smoothed ones I have here. They had rounded faces front and back. On the ones I grind to mimic cast ones I grind them thinner and flat, with as square corners as I can get. If anybody tries to mimic a cast one. Be sure to use a FSB with lots of meat between the sight detent hole and the front face. And be careful how much you remove. Guess how I know this! |
