My Stag 16" carbine was functioning fine before installing a Brownels 22 conversion. After about 600+ rounds of 22 and some cleaning, I now get FTE issues after putting the stock bolt carrier back in and shoot .556. The spent round is still in the chamber, so would this be short stroking and a problem with the gas system? All 22 ammo shot was plated or jacketed bulk (Remington, Winchester, Federal). There were no malfunctions prior to shooting the conversion. I have performed a light cleaning and the gas tube doesn't appear to be blocked, or at least as far as I can get a pipe cleaner in it. I tried a different BCG from another AR and it does the same thing. I suppose I'll pull the gas tube out and look for blockage. Any suggestions?

Id clean it completly and also check your inside of your upper a member here told me his conversion scraped up his upper so when he reinstalled his bolt he noticed it..

I had the same problem but I was shooting non-plated 22LR and the lead plugged the the gas port and tube.  I had to remove the front sight to clear the gas port and tube.  This doesn't happen as much when shooting plated ammo, but I think you should blow the system out with a .223 round every couple hundred rounds.  600 rds may have been to many without blowing the system out.

I had a similar problem after shooting Colibri rounds using an adapter. Finally resolved the problem after using Shooters Choice lead remover and a bore brush.
FWIW
YMMV

Shoot around 5 rounds of 5.56 to blow any crud out of your gas system, and use plated .22 in the future.

Vigorous cleaning can work, too, but 5 rounds are quicker.
