I have a DPMS carbine with an ARES kit installed. After about 30 rounds the carrier hangs up and won't go into battery. It will pick up the next round but hang about half way over the mag. I can drop the mag and it goes home without problem. I can also single load the mag and the bolt will hold open and spit out the brass. I have tried different mags and also compared it to my old carrier and it looks exactly the same with the same wear marks. I know this will be fodder for all the piston haters out there but my son is a lefty and it makes his life easier when he shoots by keeping some of the crap out of his face. The only thing I can think of that I haven't tried is to soak it down before I shoot. I have a POF also and I am spoiled with the silicone nickle plating/cleaning optional. I tried to fine a thread on this in the information area but came up with a blank. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

I haven't played with a Black lighting yet, but best guess is that either the rod or the piston is binding up, and the push rod stuck forward is stopping the carrier from going into battery. You might want to pull the hand guards and check the the push rod for a nasty bur, or being bent that is making it bind. Also check the rod return spring for an end of wind bur (inside and out) that may be doing the same. The piston and housing should be good to go, but not a bad idea to just check then as well for a milling bur that is causing problems with the pistol binding up rear ward. Note: the only carrier's that I have seen are for the M-16 platform which had a shrouded FP, but if they have un-shrouded the FP on the Semi carriers, then suspect that the hammer is binding up on the FP collar, and a top of FP hammer's contact pad radius tweak should solve the problem there. |
He said in his post "I can drop the mag and it goes home without problem." This would make me look somewhere else first (although I would check for binding or burrs). I would look into a new (or stronger) buffer spring. And this is if the rounds are not impacting on the receiver instead of the feed ramps. Do you have M4 feed ramps & M4 receiver cuts? |

The rounds are coming out of the mag without any trouble, in fact the round will be half way in the chamber and the bolt/carrier will be hung up behind it with about an inch or so between the two. I had checked the op rod/piston mechanism and it is all straight and no burs. I had the Ares semiauto carrier and it was hanging on the hammer and I swapped it for an Ares M16 carrier, which fixed that problem. It seems like there is too much drag between the top of the mag and carrier since when I hit the release button and drop the mag down, the carrier moves to battery. The bind is strong enough that I have to hit the foward assist a couple of times and sometimes it still won't go into battery, unless I drop out the mag. The feed ramps aren't M4 style but the copper marks from feeding show no signs of hitting outside the regular ramps, and the rounds are making it into the chamber. Also when I inspected the rounds, the bullet isn't shoved into the brass, still at the normal crimp line. I do shoot with a suppressor and my other thought is that I am not keeping enough oil on the carrier to keep it running smooth. |

If just dropping the mag without touching the charging handle or forward assist, then suspect that the bottom of the carrier is dragging on the top of the feed lips, back u channel of the mags. In a jam like this, see if just wiggling the mag resolves the problem. If so, take a good look at the bottom of the carrier in the side slots for signs of feed lip contact, and even on the back U slot of the mags to confirm that the bottom middle flat section of the carrier was milled narrow enough to begin with. |
