So out sighting in the new rifle and had 6 new magazines of 55 gr Federal fmj cheapies. New mags were a little stiff I think.

Anyway, on two of the mags, about every other shot was a Failure to Feed.

Should I be thinking new mag wear in, or perhaps different ammo? Or should I be looking at the gas system a little closer? The other mags were fine.

16" middy, VLTOR MUR, Larue Low pro gas block, etc.

Fail to feed on new mags is becoming all to common.  Look at your brass and examine the cases for deep scratches from sharp feedlips.

If you want to test your gas system - then just load one round, fire - and ensure it locks back, every time.  If it does - your gas system is good to go.

A bud was out last weekend shooting Guat in a M16 - and told me how the guat sucked.  I couldnt believe this - then I found out it was a bunch of failures to feed, and they were using a brand new D&H magazine.  Sure enough - that mag had really sharp feedlips with brass shavings and marks all over the tips.

Thanks guys. I did indeed note scratches on the brass and in a couple of instances it was very hard to move a round out of the magazine by hand.

So do I take the file to them?

A fingernail file - not a real file.  We just want to break the burr - not remove metal from the lip.

Or - you can just shoot it out - a couple mags full usually does it for me.
