F marked indicates is it drilled while on the barrel, <Incorrect infor crossed out - F> try looking for more of an aftermarket gas block, or you will have to get a gunsmith involved

Not sure, but it's easy enough for you to cut off your bayo lug with Dremel.

I thought F marked meant it the top of the base where the post goes was machined so its .040 higher than a standard non marked FSB?another words isnt F for mil-spec height FSB?

Instead of cutting off the lug you can grind down the sides so a bayonet wont attach yet retains the look of a working lug.

What? F marked FSBs indicate what height the FSB is.

How high should a removable CH be to work well with a F marked FSB?

Or what brand works best?

I'm using a non-F marked FSB on a carbine-length gas system and a MBUS, and it works fine.

If you're having trouble getting zeroed because you can't get the front sight post high enough, Bushmaster sells front sight posts that are 0.04" taller than normal, which gives you the extra elevation you would otherwise get F-Marked FSB.

With a "F" FSB it doesn't matter what carry handle you use.  With a Bushmaster CH you may have to lower the front sight post a little more than you would with a Colt, but either will work.  The problem is not with the sight post's downward travel, there is plenty of room.  The problem arises when you have a non "F" FSB with the Colt carry handle.  There may not be enough upward travel for the sight post to lower the POI.

The poster after you states he has a non "F" with a MBUS and it works fine.  That is where it gets confusing.  Sometimes the combination will work (actually it should always work, but that isn't the case which Colt found out afterwards).  Sometimes the tolerances are just out of whack enough so they don't work.  That was partially the reason for the creation of the "F".  I would guess if he tried to move his POI down several inches at 50 yards he would run out of adjustment room.

It is not proper to call one mil spec and the other commercial.  Both are mil spec, they were developed at different times.  Ideally the "F" will replace all FSB's, but non "F"s remain in the system and are still used by some manufacturers.  The only "commercial" thing is the Bushmaster carry handle which is slightly lower than the Colt.

"F" always works.  But, here are most combinations of non "F" and "F"s with different upper configurations:

Rifle length - either FSB works with any upper/sight combination
Mid Length - either FSB works with any upper/sight combination. (An "F" will give you more room for adjusting the POI lower.)
Carbine - A "F" will work with any upper/sight combination.  A non "F" will work with A1/A2 uppers.  On flat tops a non "F" will work with the Bushmaster carry handle which is lower.  Sometimes it will work with a Colt carry handle or BUIS, but not always.  In those cases that it doesn't you will need a taller sight post.

OK that makes sense, my RRA just came in two days ago I ordered it in Feb, it's nice to know I didn't waste $100 on a CH that wont work. Thank you!

DPMS carry handle is also lower and cheaper than the Bushmaster.

What other carry handles are shorter? RRA?

I have an Armalite 16" M4 profile flat-top upper I bought a couple years ago during their 12 days of Christmas sale. I built the gun with an ACOG so never thought about the front sight base. I put the sight on my newer mid-length so I want a carry handle for the M-4. It is not F marked and I measured it to be sure and it's 1.94" so it's standard.

I am wondering about this, also.  I bought one of the DS Arms 16" uppers and the FSB is not f-marked.  So a Bushmaster or DPMS removable carry handle will work well?  I notice that some other vendors removable carry handle specifies that it works with the f-marked front sight.
